Prabhupāda's Kṛṣṇa Conscious Meetings

Śrīla Prabhupāda utilized every meeting, whether with a single individual or a massive crowd, as an opportunity to deliver the message of Lord Caitanya. His interactions ranged from profound, life-altering encounters with his own spiritual master to strategic discussions with world leaders and joyous gatherings with young students. Through all these engagements, his singular motive remained constant: to awaken the dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness within everyone he met.

The Defining Meeting with His Spiritual Master

The most significant meeting in Śrīla Prabhupāda's life occurred in 1922 when he first met Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. During this very first encounter, his spiritual master planted the seed of his worldwide mission by ordering him to preach the cult of Lord Caitanya in the Western countries. Śrīla Prabhupāda deeply cherished this brief but infinitely potent meeting, attributing all his later success in translating and preaching to the divine grace bestowed upon him in those moments.

"He (my Guru Maharaja) asked me to take up this job as soon as I met Him in 1922; unfortunately I was so worthless that I delayed the matter until 1965, but He is so kind that by force He engaged me in His service."

"I met my spiritual master Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami in 1922 and he desired me to preach in the foreign countries the spiritual movement started by Lord Caitanya for enlightenment of all materialistic men all over the world."

DON'T DEPEND ON DEMONS

Srila Prabhupada presents a fundamental philosophical principle: every living entity must take shelter; no one can remain truly independent. The distinction between a "demon" and a "divine" person lies entirely in where that shelter is sought. Individuals described as demons, lacking intelligence, take shelter of material concepts such as lust, pride, and false prestige. By relying on these temporary and illusory things, they remain in a state of conditional existence.
Conversely, an intelligent person understands their constitutional position and consciously chooses to take shelter of the Supreme Person, Krishna. This simple shift—giving up the shelter of "all this nonsense" and surrendering to the divine—is the defining characteristic of a divine consciousness. It is crucial to recognize that independence is never an option at any stage of life; our constitutional position is to always remain dependent. The only choice we have is whether to be dependent on material illusion or upon the Supreme.

At last the father himself took up a chopper to kill his son, and thus Nṛsiṁhadeva appeared and killed the heinous father in the presence of the son. Thus no one can kill the devotee of the Lord. Similarly, Arjuna was also saved by the Lord, although all dangerous weapons were employed by his great opponents like Bhīṣma.

KRISHNA EXPANDS AS DEITY

Srila Prabhupada explains the science of Deity worship using a simple, practical analogy. He compares the Deity to a mailbox. Just as a mailbox, despite appearing to be a small box, is an official representative of the Post Office—and therefore "not different from Post Office"—the Deity is an expansion of Krishna's ananda-cinmaya-rasa form.
The logic follows that when you place a letter in the authorized mailbox, it reaches its destination thousands of miles away because it is accepted by the postal system. Similarly, when you worship the Deity with sincere devotion, your service is accepted directly by Krishna (Don't think that you are worshipping some doll. No.). The Deity is a facility provided by the Supreme Lord to accept the humble service of His devotees, allowing us to establish a personal relationship with Him even while living in the material world.

How Prabhupāda Trains His Disciples to Become Perfect Devotees

To build a society capable of delivering the world from illusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda required his followers to rise above ordinary human frailties and become perfect devotees of the Lord. He taught that a true Vaiṣṇava is not a mere sentimentalist, but a highly expert, humble, and perfectly cultured individual. By establishing rigorous daily practices, demanding complete independence from bodily designations, and emphasizing the absolute necessity of cooperative association, he trained an entire generation of Western youth to attain the highest standard of spiritual life.

The Qualities of an Expert Devotee

The transformation of a conditioned soul into a pure devotee is marked by the development of twenty-six distinct transcendental qualities. A profound standard of behavior was demanded by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who completely rejected the idea that renunciation equates to incompetence or foolishness. He taught his disciples that a true devotee is dakṣa (expert), acting as a perfect gentleman who is tolerant, liberal, and capable of executing any task required to push forward the saṅkīrtana movement.

"A devotee's one qualification is daksa, daksa, expert. Out of the twenty-six qualifications, a devotee is always very expert in dealing. It is not that because they have left anything material, they do not know how to deal with material things."

"Devotee means to become fully qualified with all the noble qualities. Devotee does not mean a rascal, at the same time, a devotee."

"Devotee means very liberal and kind to everyone, always gentleman under all kinds of conditions of life."

"Do not fight with anyone, try to remain always very humble and meek like the advanced Vaisnava devotee, always thinking yourself lower than the straw in the street and more tolerant than the tree."

"We want that all our men shall be able to do everything in Krsna Consciousness. A devotee is expert in all things."

ROOT OF MATERIAL EXISTENCE

Srila Prabhupada cuts to the core of the human condition with a profound definition of material life. He explains that the foundational principle of this realm is envy of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This envy manifests as the false mentality: "Why Krishna shall be the enjoyer? I shall be enjoyer." This competitive spirit drives us to attempt to be the center of existence, separate from the Supreme.
This desire to imitate God is the very definition of maya, or illusion. Srila Prabhupada clarifies that in reality, "Nobody can be enjoyer." Krishna is the bhoktaram yajna-tapasam—the supreme enjoyer of all sacrifices and austerities. The perfection of human life, therefore, is not to compete with or imitate the Supreme, but to happily supply the ingredients for His enjoyment. By aligning ourselves with this truth, we find our constitutional position of eternal service and genuine peace.

The demon father employed all his weapons to kill the devotee son, Prahlāda, but by the grace of the Lord he was saved from all sorts of dangerous actions by his father. He was thrown in a fire, in boiling oil, from the top of a hill, underneath the legs of an elephant, and he was administered poison.

PRABHUPADA'S FATHER

Srila Prabhupada shares a deeply personal recollection of his youth and his father's grand vision for his life. While it was common for ambitious Indian families of the era to desire a Western education and a lucrative career for their sons—such as becoming a barrister—his father had a different aspiration. He did not want his son to become a "worldly man, earning money," nor did he want him to become a mleccha (one disconnected from Vedic culture).
Even after Srila Prabhupada completed his college education and an arrangement was made for him to travel to England to study law, his father intervened and refused. This parental decision, though seemingly restrictive, was pivotal in steering Srila Prabhupada toward his ultimate mission of spreading Krishna consciousness globally. It is a powerful reminder of the profound responsibility parents have in shaping their children's spiritual future, prioritizing eternal well-being over temporary material success.
