Coastal Clean-Up in the Kloogaranna Area (PRO-Coast partner)
Today we took part in a beach clean-up at Meremõisa, in the Kloogaranna coastal area, working for the benefit of the environment, the local community, and European science! 💪🤝🌍
🏫 Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) Tartu College is involved in a research and innovation project funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe programme. The project focuses on the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems.
🔬 PRO-Coast (Empowering communities to drive proactive change for coastal biodiversity and ecosystem services) is a 36-month EU-funded initiative that aims to strengthen the role of local communities in conserving biodiversity and improving ecosystem services along European coastlines. 🌱
📍 One of the project's test areas is located in the Kloogaranna–Laulasmaa coastal region of Western-Harju municipality (Estonia), which is why today’s clean-up took place at Meremõisa beach.
👉 During the cleanup, we collected coastal litter to create two symbolic "waste beacons," raising awareness about pollution and sustainable practices.
This action supported two initiatives:
• The PRO-Coast research and innovation project
• And the Harju Fishing Association’s initiative to promote fisheries and maritime heritage as part of the “Paldiski Day – In the Rhythm of Sea Winds” festival. 🌊🎣

The Non-EU CS7b Kildn/Eidsvika | Norway | Partner: University of Bergen
The study area is a bay on the island and its surrounding area on the island Askøy, located on Norway's west coast. Biodiversity status and value: A sheltered sandy bay, wetland, estuary, and rocky formations offer diverse habitats for coastal flora and fauna. Challenges: A emission-free cruise ship terminal is proposed for this bay. Community and cultural context: Southern Askøy is densely populated, and Eidsvika is the only nearby natural recreational area. The island's population has grown rapidly, and it has undergone numerous development projects in recent years. Economic engine and primary production: Industry, construction, trade and services. However, the local economy is also influenced by its proximity to Bergen, with a significant portion of the workforce commuting from the island to Bergen, and a smaller number commuting in the opposite direction. Governance: Askøy is a municipality. The Eidsvika area lacks protection status but is designated by the municipality as a recreational and grazing area, with suggested plans to rezone it as a harbor area. PRO-Coast actions: Follow and support stakeholders and their negotiations regarding this land-use conflict and its implications for coastal biodiversity.
