Hi there, data people!
Just sending you a big THANK YOU for attending our The Futures Of Data Conference yesterday. We had a blast and we hope that you went home with a bag full of inspiration and knowledge.

Katryna Dow explained how the data (r)evolution allows new business models to be developed and how users can take back the control over what happens with their data. The privacy debate (with Ingrid De Poorter, Lieve De Mol, Dimitri Verhelst and Katryna Dow, moderated by Wim De Waele) showed us that we're pretty far from consensus on several current privacy issues. Privacy is a zone where governments, individuals and businesses come together into a complex relationship. There is agreement that individual users should be in the drivers' seat. Gerrie Smits told us a story about blockchain and how our future will be influenced by this new technology. Blockchain is far more than bitcoins as it touches upon fundamental issues such as trust, power and human interactions. That's a point Ben Caudron made as well: it's people that make technology. And there are hidden power relationships behind everything we see in the technological field. Are we serving the interests of a Silicon Valley elite disguised as our own interests? Jeroen Lemaire took us on a trip to the future of mobile. Turns out that has not that much to do with screens and apps but rather with Artifical Intelligence, Internet of Things and Virtual Realities. The biggest mistake you can make, is assuming that the future brings "more of the same". Finally, Andrés Colmenares spread some internet randomness around. He explained how metaphors of the internet are influencing how we regulate it and think about it. Internet connects everything, from Tom Cruise dancing (pssst: https://media4.giphy.com/media/10Fvut9kJXS6Fq/giphy.gif) to the futures of living spaces. Internet, fueled by data, is rapidly shaping our increasingly hybrid culture. It's up to us to make the future look bright. Our digital futures are happening now, and we build them together. Hi all! It's time to focus on our fourth speaker for The Futures of Data Conference. Ben Caudron is one of the few Belgian sociologists that work hard to bring the debate about new technologies to a very wide audience. Emphasizing the role of the social consequences of technology, he complements those who one-sidedly focus on technology as such. Neither a tech-utopian nor a dystopian, he tries to bridge this gap by analyzing the different perspectives and feelings people have on technology.

Bonus: Tom Palmaerts will be your host for the night, and he's got some gamified data-experiments for the crowd. It's gonna be lots of fun too!

Jeroen and his rapidly expanding team “design and build tomorrow’s digital experiences”. Although they started out as app-developers, the focus of the company broadened along with technological evolutions like Internet of Things and Virtual & Augmented Reality. Oh, and he has a column about the (future of) technology and entrepreneurship in De Tijd as well (does he sleep at all?!).
