Award Winners for the Ghent Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival 2025 announced!

The 2025 edition of the Ghent Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival came to an end after a week of screening documentary film gems coming from Belgium and all around the world. As is tradition, the festival took place at Ghent's beloved independent cinema Studio Skoop, where guests could also enjoy a free drink at the cosy Skoop Café.

“I can proudly say the 2025 edition was once again a blast—great films, a fantastic audience, and that perfect mix of crowd-pleasers and deeply resonant arthouse cinema. The closing night was unforgettable, with Becoming Madonna drawing a massive turnout, including fans fully dressed in tribute. On the more introspective side, films like Saturn and Marching in the Dark left the audience in stunned silence, while Zaad offered a deeply intimate and raw portrait of a father through the lens of his son. Pure life—so beautiful.” says festival director Kris De Meester.

🎬 Belgische première van ‘Becoming Madonna’ sluit Viewpoint 2025 af met een iconisch portret
🗓️ Zondag 20 april 2025 – Studio Skoop, Gent

Voor de slotavond van de 17de editie van het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival brengen we een bijzondere première naar Gent: Becoming Madonna, de nieuwste documentaire van de Britse regisseur Michael Odgen, waarin we de Queen of Pop zoals nooit tevoren te zien krijgen.

Aan de hand van nooit eerder vertoonde foto's, privéopnames en pas ontdekte audiotapes, keert de film terug naar Madonna's jonge jaren – van onzekere buitenstaander in het conservatieve Michigan tot de meest invloedrijke, radicale en controversiële vrouwelijke popster ter wereld. Familieleden, jeugdvrienden en eerste samenwerkers delen hun verhalen, die samen het portret vormen van een vrouw die de muziekindustrie – en de regels ervan – voorgoed herschreef.

Becoming Madonna biedt niet alleen een blik op haar opmars, maar toont ook de tol van die ambitie. De dood van haar moeder op jonge leeftijd, de verliezen tijdens de AIDS-epidemie – waaronder haar beste vriend Martin Burgoyne en mentor Christopher Flynn – tekenen een intiemer, fragieler beeld van de popster dan we doorgaans te zien krijgen. De documentaire herbekijkt ook het schandaal rond haar expliciete boek S*x, en laat zien hoe die controverse slechts één facet was van een veel complexer, bewuster en strategischer persoon.

Op zaterdagavond viert het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival de rijkdom en veelzijdigheid van de Belgische documentairefilm met een bijzondere programmatie: Belgian Documentary Now. Diep in de Oeral staat een vervallen gebouw waar meer dan enkel herinneringen worden bewaard. Deze korte documentaire ontrafelt een duister geheim dat het dorp sinds de Stalin-tijd in de greep houdt. Oude politievideo’s, mysterieuze verhalen en een vermeend buitenaards wezen – Object 817 is een beklemmende reis door collectief geheugen en mythologie.

🎬 ‘ZAAD’ – een rauw en intiem familieportret op Viewpoint 2025

Op vrijdag 18 april presenteert het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival de Belgische documentaire ZAAD van Dries Meddens – een persoonlijke, onverbloemde zoektocht naar afkomst, verlies en psychisch welzijn. De film wordt vertoond in Studio Skoop en vormt een van de meest introspectieve stemmen van deze 17de editie.

Na het overlijden van zijn moeder ontdekt Dries dat zijn vader kampt met een bipolaire stoornis. Terwijl de rouw nog nauwelijks begonnen is, wordt zijn jonge volwassen leven volledig opgeslorpt door de zorg voor zijn vader – én de manier waarop de maatschappij en de psychiatrie met diens toestand omgaan. Wanneer zijn vader overlijdt op een gesloten afdeling van een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis, blijft Dries achter met een leeg huis, dozen vol onafgewerkte projecten… en een brief van zijn grootvader.

Die brief opent een vergeten hoofdstuk: een man die niet alleen een internationaal zaadveredelingsbedrijf oprichtte (Nunhems Zaden, nu eigendom van BASF), maar ook schilderde, schreef, en elf kinderen had. Eerst voelt Dries een diepe connectie, maar die slaat langzaam om in onrust: wat als de mentale kwetsbaarheid van zijn vader generaties teruggaat? Wat groeit er dan verder in hem – en in zijn eigen kinderen?

Met een unieke mix van archiefbeelden, familieanekdotes, schrijnende confrontaties en bij momenten hilarische vondsten, bouwt ZAAD zich op als een filmisch zelfonderzoek dat geen gemakkelijke antwoorden biedt, maar wel de kracht van inzicht toont.

🎬 ‘Marching in the Dark’ – een ode aan vrouwelijke veerkracht op Viewpoint 2025

Op woensdag 16 april brengt het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival een bijzonder krachtige documentaire naar Studio Skoop: Marching in the Dark van Kinshuk Surjan, een Belgisch-Indiase coproductie die eerder geselecteerd werd voor CPH:DOX (Kopenhagen) en Hot Docs (Toronto).

Na de zelfmoord van haar man – een landbouwer die, net als duizenden anderen, de druk van schulden en droogte niet meer aankon – staat Sanjivani er plots alleen voor. In een cultuur waarin weduwen vaak sociaal worden uitgesloten en genegeerd, weigert zij zich neer te leggen bij haar lot. Marching in the Dark volgt haar strijd om zichzelf én haar kinderen een toekomst te geven, tegen een achtergrond van systematisch onrecht en diepgewortelde tradities.

Het kantelpunt komt wanneer Sanjivani zich aansluit bij een praatgroep van andere vrouwen die hun man verloren aan de landbouwcrisis. In die ruimte van gedeelde pijn ontstaat iets onverwachts: verbondenheid, herkenning, kracht. En uiteindelijk – hoop.

Met een speelduur van 1u49 is Marching in the Dark een beklijvende documentaire die de structurele problematiek van de Indiase landbouwcrisis verweeft met een intiem verhaal over vrouw-zijn, verlies en solidariteit. Een stille maar radicale daad van verzet.

🎬 Belgische première van ‘Saturn’ – een confronterende familiekroniek op Viewpoint 2025

Op dinsdag 15 april verwelkomt het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival de Belgische première van Saturn, de indrukwekkende debuutfilm van Daniel Tornero (Spanje), eerder vertoond op het Festival de Málaga en het Festival de San Sebastián. De vertoning vindt plaats in Studio Skoop, Gent.

In deze persoonlijke en onthutsende documentaire keert Tornero terug naar zijn familiegeschiedenis, nadat in 2018 zijn grootvader werd gearresteerd voor kindermisbruik en poging tot ontvoering. De man is inmiddels veroordeeld tot twaalf jaar cel en wacht zijn effectieve opsluiting af. Tornero zoekt hem opnieuw op – en in dat gesprek wordt hij geconfronteerd met de blik van zijn grootvader, diens ontwijkende antwoorden én zijn eigen emoties.

Tegelijkertijd verzamelt de familie zich in het landelijke ouderlijk huis. Daar, tussen gedeelde stiltes en openbaringen, komt een pijnlijk besef naar boven: dat het patroon van misbruik en emotionele verstikking zich over generaties heeft voortgezet. De filmmaker stelt zich daarbij niet buiten het verhaal – Saturn is evenzeer een spiegel als een aanklacht.

Met een speelduur van 1u36 is Saturn een film die onder de huid kruipt. Het is een pakkend familieportret, maar ook een universeel verhaal over trauma, stilte en de noodzaak om het zwijgen te doorbreken.

🎬 Viewpoint opent zijn 17de editie met Belgische première van ‘Freshman’

Op maandag 14 april om 20u opent het Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival zijn 17de editie in Studio Skoop in Gent. De openingsavond zet meteen de toon met een krachtige selectie documentaires, waaronder de Belgische première van Freshman van Michał Edelman en Tomasz Pawlik – een film die eerder werd geselecteerd voor het gerenommeerde Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival.

Freshman is een indringend portret van de vijftienjarige Jędrek, die terechtkomt in een jeugdgevangenis, ver weg van familie en vrienden. De camera observeert hem gedurende twee jaar terwijl hij zijn plek probeert te vinden in deze harde, gesloten wereld. In het begin is hij angstig en alleen, maar stilaan ontstaat er een onverwachte vriendschap met Wojtek – en met die connectie groeit ook het besef dat deze plek, hoe uitzichtloos ook, een soort thuis kan worden.

De film snijdt diepe thema’s aan als jeugd, isolement, overlevingsdrang en verbondenheid. Het is een opener die je raakt, ontregelt en doet nadenken – precies waar Viewpoint voor staat.

Zaad (Belgium) by Dries Meddens
The documentary ZAAD is the autobiographical story of filmmaker Dries Meddens. Searching for identity and fearing genetic heredity, he digs into his family history. After his mother passed away, Dries discovers his father’s bipolarity. The care this mental illness imposes in his young adult life leaves no place for mourning over his mother’s death. Countering the way society and psychiatry crudely and ruthlessly treat his father absorbs all his attention. Eventually – while in a closed section of a mental hospital – his father dies of a heart attack. Emptying his parent’s home, Dries discovers, among an overload of left behind projects of his father, an old letter from his grandfather. The man appears to have led a very busy and productive life. He was the founder of an internationally renowned seed breeding company (Nunhems Zaden, now owned by BASF) and still had time to paint, write diaries and be the father of 11 children. At first Dries is happy about his discoveries and feels a strong link to his grandfather. But the more he digs into the past, the less he can avoid a growing fear that his father's psychiatric illness might be hereditary, from grandfather to father to son. And what then germinates in Dries' children? Browsing through film and photo archives, with dramatic and sometimes hilarious findings from three generations of family history, Dries looks for answers, but his search only leads to more questions. Ultimately, Dries decides to go and see a psychiatrist. These visits, combined with the viewing of his archival material help Dries look at bipolarity with new eyes. He realizes that the most powerful treatment is already within his reach.

Somewhere deep in the Ural, abandoned buildings are holding more than just memories of the past. They also bear witness to a secret that has plagued the community since the Stalin era. Local people speak about strange events that occurred decades ago, leading to the gradual extinction of their once-bustling community. We discover a group of people on home footage taken at the local police station in the ‘90. They examine an unusual creature, believed to be of extraterrestrial origin. Its appearance inspires fear and fascination, and soon it reaches a cult status. “The Kysthym Alien” has its own monument, poems and songs… But the strange events surrounding the creature’s discovery remain shrouded in secrecy, and the truth continues to be buried. The film takes us on a journey of discovery aiming to unravel the dark truth that has been haunting this community for so long.

Aphrodite is not only a prominent figure in Greek mythology but also the name of a love motel located in Viana de Castelo, a beach town in Portugal. As you can see, it creates a thematic connection between the mythical realm of love and the tangible experiences within the motel. This documentary film captures a collective exploration by a group of filmmakers, delving into the ambiance, privacy, choices, architecture, and the essence of love within this unique establishment. The shots and edits were made through consensus among the filmmakers. In my role as a cinematographer, I relished the opportunity to navigate the intimate and restricted corridors of the Aphrodite motel. This project, born out of a film school exercise with a group of classmates, unfolds as an attempt to unravel the intricacies of love in a distinctive setting.

This short documentary explores the role of dance in the life of Lenie, an 18-year-old Brussels girl with disabilities. It blends observational footage of her classes at Platform K, a modern dance company for dancers with disabilities, with footage of the other dancing Lenie enjoys: moving to pop music in her own room and recording herself. As Lenie moves, she reclaims control of her body — while learning to let it go.

Featuring never-seen-before photos, footage, and recently uncovered audio tapes of young Madonna, this feature length documentary traces her rise from insecure outsider in Michigan to becoming the most powerful and controversial female pop star on the planet. Interviews with family, friends and collaborators reveal the inside story of Madonna’s rise to conquer a male-dominated music industry, culminating in the astonishing publication of a book featuring over a hundred erotic photos of her under the title S*x. Immersive archive also sheds new light on the personal tragedies that fuelled Madonna’s drive, re-examining the early death of her mother and those of her close friends Martin Burgoyne and first mentor Christopher Flynn during the AIDs epidemic of the late 1980s. Through their stories, this film shows Madonna in a new light: smarter, more radical and more vulnerable than anyone at the time gave her credit for.
