Read European, feel European!

Eyes on Europe is a students’ association created in 2004 and based at the Institute for European Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (IEE – ULB). Its aim is to raise awareness about European issues through a youth-to-youth approach with the aid of:

- a website (www.eyes-on-europe.eu) on which news articles are regularly published
- a bilingual magazine published twice a year
- several conferences and debates on EU related topics organized every year. Active members of EoE are enabled to develop professional skills, to become autonomous and responsible as well as to blossom through a project of their own.

The EU-MERCOSUR trade agreement is an international deal steeped in controversy that took more than 25 years to sort out. The deal creates a new preferential trade system for the importation of MERCOSUR agricultural products which will directly compete with pricier and highly regulated European goods. In addition, European farmers could never match the scale of production of Latin American farms that may use forbidden or cheaper pesticides and fertilisers. On Feb. 27, 2026 EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the provisional application of the trade part of the MERCOSUR agreement.

Imagine a regional policy with no regions. Is this the kind of Cohesion Policy that the European Commission wants to put in place during the next programming period? Following the publication of the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) proposal in July 2025, European Institutions, bodies, and regional interest stakeholders immediately opposed it, instead suggesting strategic alternatives that would restore regional and multi-level governance to their rightful place at the heart of the Cohesion Policy.

On Friday June 5, & gathered at the for a very special session of the Human Rights Café: “How are (E)U?– Exploring the connections between EU affairs, human rights and your daily life.”

The discussion started at the intersection of three “pillars”:

1️⃣ European (and global) politics

2️⃣ Career in the “EU bubble”

3️⃣ Human rights.

It then evolved into a deep reflection on democratic issues affecting Europe (at the national and supranational levels) and the rest of the world.

How to balance potential conflicts between different rights and freedoms? What are the shortcomings of the current EU political system? What are our personal elements of hope? How can we better navigate the “bubble” to generate impact these processes from within?

A huge thank you to all of the participants who sparked – and attempted to answer – these overarching 🙌.

In a time of polycrisis, insecurity and ongoing human rights violations, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But together, we proved that building shared spaces for honest reflection is possible, necessary and potentially transformative! 💫

Mars 2026, Bruxelles. Les rues vibrent au rythme de mobilisations antiracistes. Parmi elles, un festival de cinéma engagé propose une programmation riche et accessible, pensée pour toucher une diversité de publics. C’est dans ce contexte que s’impose presque naturellement le choix de L’Histoire de Souleymane, projeté au centre culturel Senghor à Etterbeek. La séance se prolonge par un débat. Un intervenant clé, « La Maison des Livreurs », syndicat défendant ces livreurs de nourriture arpentant nos rues, souvent à vélo, apporte un éclairage sur la réalité du terrain. Très vite, une question s’impose néanmoins : pourquoi le droit semble-t-il incapable de réguler pleinement les situations liées a ces livreurs, dits “travailleurs de plateforme” ?

🎥 Press freedom is one of the founding pillars of democracy: when it is threatened, democratic life suffers. Across Europe, journalistic freedom is under pressure, not only from political actors but also from economic and legal mechanisms that limit what the media can investigate and say. Non‑governmental organisations such as and freedom house, which regularly monitor these threats and advocate for journalistic freedom, have highlighted the spread of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) across the EU, especially in countries like Italy.
