✨OA publication✨

This book is the result of an international symposium held in Paris in 2017 on a subject undergoing profound renewal over recent decades, namely the writing practices of the ancient world. The project focused on territories commonly considered “peripheral” because they are seen as cultural frontiers. Yet these are places of dynamic processes of cultural change and invention of new ways of communication.

This volume contains fourteen papers that show the ongoing significance of the thought of Thomas Aquinas for theology and philosophy today. The papers are offered to Henk Schoot, professor for the Theology of Thomas Aquinas, and to Rudi te Velde, professor for the Philosophy of Thomas Aquinas upon their retirement. Both are members of the Thomas Institute of the School of Catholic Theology of Tilburg University (The Netherlands). The authors are (former) colleagues and fellow Thomist scholars from around the world who want to honor and thank Henk Schoot and Rudi te Velde for their work and friendship.

Each of the five books of the Psalter has proved to be composed and well composed. The same is true of the Book of Praises as a whole. The procedures of biblical rhetorical analysis have made possible to show it, despite the shortcomings of a research that could hardly be based on many earlier works.

This monograph considers not so much the moments, thoughts, speculations with which the so-called ‘Cappadocian Fathers’ agreed and proposed a unified doctrine, but the points and moments, the doctrines in which they disagreed. Thus, it is not a new book on the Cappadocian Fathers considered as a unity, which surely would have come to a huge dimension, but asks the question: Is it possible to speak of agreement and, at the same time, of differentiation between these Fathers? Is it useful to change, at least in part, an established opinion, that of the ‘Cappadocian theology’? The examination of the various problems leads to an affirmative answer.

The present work represents a (re)turn to a phenomenological approach to iconographic exegesis that is especially concerned with how images and texts might mutually inform one another at the level of their respective poetics. As a test case for such a comparison, this volume examines how the phenomenon of violence figures in Lamentations 2 and in Ashurbanipal’s palace reliefs - specifically, one of the Battle of Til-Tuba programs (Southwest Palace, Room 33) and the lion hunt reliefs (North Palace, Room C).

Social poisons analyses why and how, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, the consumption of toxic substances became a social issue that stirred up great concern among contemporaries. By using a wide variety of sources (legislative texts, police archives, diplomatic documents, criminological, medical and psychiatric publications, press articles, literary works and other artistic creations, such as the popular rebetika songs), the book sheds a new light on the advent of 'drug addiction'.

This book offers the first comprehensive study of the Saadian collection. It first examines how Mulay Zaydan, but also his father, Ahmad al-Mansur (r. 1578-1603), and one of his brothers collected the books that were theirs and traces the history of the library. It gives us a unique insight into the book of this period in Morocco, its aesthetics and techniques, and the attentive readers that were the Saadian sultans. Finally, it offers a detailed analysis of the choices of these literate princes and a mapping of their intellectual interests by following the thematic classification of the collection, which essentially overlaps with that of the Muslim world at that time.

If we understand the liturgy of the Church as a form of tradition, how can a theological concept of tradition then contribute to the development of evaluation criteria for reforms of the liturgy? In other words: how can we make the concept of tradition productive for the evaluation of the process of liturgical renewal?

Paul of Venice joined the Austin Friars at an early age and was sent by them from Padua to study at Oxford in 1390. When he returned, full of ideas and laden with books, he began his prodigious writing career with several books on logic, including the Logica Magna, which runs to some half a million words. The current volume contains the final treatise, on insolubles - that is, logical paradoxes. After surveying fifteen previous solutions, Paul develops his own, based on the idea that such propositions falsify themselves.

29/12/2022

The mosaics of Delos are all preserved on the island and, in the great majority of cases, in their original location, maintained in an exceptional setting since the entire island is a protected archaeological site. This first distinguishing feature of the Delos mosaics means they can be studied within their proper architectural setting. Their second distinguishing feature is that they are many in number and almost all of them are contemporaneous having been produced over a comparatively short span of time between 130 and 68 BC. They therefore form a unique group both for the study of mosaics and, in conjunction with the paintings and stuccos of the same buildings, for the study of architectural decoration of Hellenistic times.
