Jacques de Viterbe (v. 1255-1307), religieux augustin, maître en théologie à l’Université de Paris, archevêque de Naples, fut l’un des principaux philosophes et théologiens de la fin du XIIIe siècle. In medieval and early modern natural philosophy, very few issues were as controversial as the nature of the elements. From the thirteenth up until the sixteenth century, European thinkers discussed this problem with growing interest. Defining the nature of the elements was key to deciphering the very structure of the universe and the essence of things. Along with five primary texts, here edited for the first time, this book discusses one of the most original contributions to this debate, that of Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (d. 1525).

Interview met co-editor Gerard Wiegers over 📖'Geschiedenissen van de islam in Nederland en Vlaanderen: Van de zestiende eeuw tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog'.

In de bundel staan verhalen die teruggaan tot de zestiende eeuw. “Door de geschiedenis heen is er vanuit Nederland een duidelijke lijn van interactie met en interesse voor moslims”, zegt Wiegers. “We zien daarbij dat er allerlei vooroordelen over elkaar zijn geweest”. De ene keer leidde dat ertoe dat moslims en islamitische invloeden werden omarmd, de andere keer juist niet.

Yesterday Yuka Kadoi, co-editor of 'Collecting Asian Art: Cultural Politics and Transregional Networks in Twentieth-Century Central Europe', presented the book at the CIHA Congress in Lyon! 🎉

'The Four Elements' is the first permanent sculpture by Jaume Plensa in Belgian public space. The monumental work is constructed from the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – and consists of two physical statues.

📍 At the Hertogen site in Leuven, three elements are placed on top of each other as a totem: 'Water, Earth and Air'. 💧🌍💨
📍 The element 'Fire' was given a place just in front of the University Library. 🔥

In het boek 'Adellijk en artistiek' weerlegt Wendy Wiertz enkele ideeën over vrouwelijke adellijke amateurkunstenaars. Ze beoefenden hun stiel niet louter binnenskamers en een geschikte huwelijkspartner vinden was ook al niet de bedoeling. Hun kunstenaarschap bleek daarentegen een krachtig middel om hun netwerk uit te breiden en te verstevigen.

📘 Re-Imagining Class: Intersectional Perspectives on Class Identity and Precarity in Contemporary Culture, edited by Michiel Rys, Liesbeth François

Contemporary culture not merely reflects ongoing societal transformations, it shapes our understanding of rapidly evolving class realities. Literature, theatre, and film urge us to put the question of class back on the agenda, and reconceptualize it through the lens of precarity and intersectionality. Relying on examples from British, French, Spanish, German, American, Swedish and Taiwanese culture, the contributors to this book document a variety of aesthetic strategies in an interdisciplinary dialogue with sociology and political theory. Doing so, this volume demonstrates the myriad ways in which culture opens up new pathways to imagine and re-imagine class as an economic relation, an identity category, and a subjective experience. Situated firmly within current debates about the impact of social mobility, precarious work, intersectional structures of exploitation, and interspecies vulnerability, this volume offers a wide-ranging panorama of contemporary class imaginaries.
