Here is how the 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐞 reported the news the following day:
"The musical genius of Germany passed away yesterday in our city.
The author of 𝘓𝘰𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘯 had been among us for several months with his beloved wife and children, hoping that the mild air of our skies might help restore his health, which had been frail for some time. He lived in great seclusion in an apartment of the Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, receiving only a few close friends.
The day before yesterday, Richard Wagner felt well enough to take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal. Yesterday, around 3 p.m., he had ordered the same excursion. But at that very hour, struck by a sudden illness, he had to be placed in bed.
Shortly after, he passed away!"
