Happy national day to all Czech people! Všechno nejlepší k českému státnímu svátku!

📜 Why this day?
On 28 October, Czech people mark the anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, when the Czechs and Slovaks united and declared their independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

🇨🇿 Why this flag?
The Czech flag was created in 1920:
• the white stripe symbolises the purity of the ideas on which the state is founded
• the red stripe represents the blood shed for peace, freedom and democracy
• the blue triangle signifies a cloudless sky above a nation at peace

🇨🇿 🇪🇺 Czechia and the EU
The EU Agency for the Space Programme is based in Prague. It manages Galileo (the EU’s navigation system) and Copernicus (the EU’s Earth observation programme).

Plastic pellets, the industrial raw materials used to make plastic products, pollute much of our environment, from the sea to our own bodies.

The European Parliament is fighting microplastic pollution from plastic pellet losses.

Under new EU rules:
🔹All companies handling over 5 tonnes of pellets must prevent and report losses
🔹This concerns transport carriers using road, rail or inland waterways, as well as maritime operators
🔹Maritime transport must use secure, high-quality packaging and proper cargo information
🔹Pictograms, warnings, and penalties will ensure compliance and public safety

This is a significant step towards the EU’s goal of reducing microplastic pollution by 30% by 2030.

⚡ 1.45 million new battery-only EVs registered
📈 +32% growth in the total electric fleet
🚗 Nearly 6 million e-vehicles on the road
🔋 13.6% of all new car registrations are electric

📜Why this day?
12 October is the day on which Spaniards commemorate the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus – an expedition sponsored by Spain – in 1492.

🇪🇸 Why this flag?
The flag as we know it today has its origin in 1785, when King Carlos III chose a red and yellow flag bearing the national coat of arms as the country’s war ensign, with the aim of making Spain's naval and merchant fleets more easily identifiable.

This week, Parliament will be working on Russian violations of EU airspace, the EU’s role in supporting peace efforts in Gaza and two motions of no confidence against the European Commission.

They will also debate and vote on simplifying EU rules for farmers and hold debates with Luxembourg's prime minister Luc Frieden and Greenland’s prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The oceans will claim what we fail to protect. 🌍

Record sea temperatures reached 21°C in spring 2024, while in the 2024-25 winter, Arctic Sea ice lost an area nearly four times the size of Poland. Sea levels have risen by 228 millimetres since 1901, threatening ecosystems, fisheries, and UNESCO heritage sites across Europe.

Nature is under pressure, with climate losses doubling in a decade and one-third of Europe facing water stress.

Europe is not standing still.

Emissions have decreased by 37% since 1990, renewables now account for 24% of EU's final energy use, and air pollution has dropped significantly.

We are fully committed to our climate goals and our ecosystems.

This is a turning point.

The planet won’t wait. Neither should we.

For centuries, Europe bled through endless wars. Neighbours became enemies, borders became battlegrounds and generations knew only division.

The creation of the European Union changed that, proving that dialogue between 🇪🇺 countries, cooperation, and solidarity can overcome conflict.

Since then, we’ve worked to build bridges where there were once barriers: we’ve mediated conflicts, supported refugees, and promoted understanding across cultures.

Today marks the finish line of European ‒ an EU-wide initiative to promote sustainable mobility.

With 2,448 participating towns and cities, this week is filled with events and is more than symbolic. It shows how rethinking mobility can lead to cleaner air and safer streets.

And the cherry on top? 🍒 Car-free Sunday, with Brussels becoming, for a day, the largest car-free zone in Europe!

Members of the European Parliament’s security and defence committee visited Greenland this week to discuss common challenges, such as maintaining peace through our common strength, and to listen to Greenlanders' concerns.

"Greenland's future will be determined by its people and will always find a strong partnership with the EU" said the chair of the committee, MEP Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
