O.U.V.R.A.G.E.S
CROISSANT, BRUSSELS

In a collective building in the municipality of Forest, the Croissant project designed by the architects of O.U.V.R.A.G.E.S. goes beyond what is usually expected of an ordinary commission. Indeed, it subtly questions how outdoor spaces are used and shared.

KSA STERRENBOS, NAZARETH

The municipality had requested that the premises for youth movements and those intended for the management of the playground be housed in separate buildings. Atelier Vens Vanbelle rejected this idea and proposed an alternative that met the programme requirements – and more.

A+313 PA+RALLEL PRACTICES
NEW WORLDS

In this article, we examine six projects by committed Belgian and Dutch design studios. What connects them is their critical view of society, whether the way we treat people in vulnerable situations or the future of our planet. Driven by a strong commitment, these studios show that things can and must be done differently. Rather than accept the situation uncomplainingly, the designers involved denounce its causes and injustices uncompromisingly.

MS-A
CERIA VERTICAL SCHOOL, ANDERLECHT

One of the major historic campuses in the Brussels-Capital Region, CERIA is undergoing an urban expansion. Initially designed in the late 1940s as a campus for teaching both the food and chemical industries in Walloon Brabant, it has now gone through two changes. The project aims to diversify the nature of the training courses on offer and take into account the linguistic dimension. It is also being expanded with new infrastructure, including the new CERIA Vertical School, designed by the MS-A team in collaboration with V+, 51N4E, BB and Greisch, under the direction of the French Community Commission (COCOF).

A+313 PA+RALLEL PRACTICES
EXPLORING URBAN STRUGGLES

While architecture travels down the ages, the same cannot be said for its practices, which adapt and evolve with the times. The present age and the challenges it presents encourage architects to outline new skills that are both in line with the norms of the profession but also at odds with them. Among these, a certain political engagement seems to stand out. This article explores the urban struggles of yesterday and today: How is this new generation of architects showing its commitment? Indeed, what are the differences and similarities between open-air swimming made possible by Pool is Cool, a guided walk by the non-profit association L’architecture qui dégenre, and an information campaign on social media by Belgian Architects United?

Discover A+313! This issue was co-edited by Evelien Pieters.

In these times of extreme crises, major societal challenges, ubiquitous liberalism and precarious working conditions, architects are looking for new ways to give concrete expression to their commitment. These architects are increasingly taking the initiative themselves, with unsolicited and experimental practices that contribute to urgent issues, sharpen the profession of architect and hold up a mirror to the sector as a whole. Their goal is to find a space of freedom, parallel to traditional construction practices, far from any economic rationale and functional expectations. In these practices, beyond responding to the demands of clients, architecture also challenges architects.

Sunshine is back!

At the request of A+, photographer Michiel De Cleene delved into his rich archive of photos taken over the years of projects by Bureau Bas Smets. He selected ten images in Belgium and beyond. They have one thing in common: the sunset.

ACROSS IN RESIDENCE
A GOOD PLACE

OPENING: 25.06.25
EXHIBITION: 28 & 29.06.25

Join us on the 25th of June from 6pm to 12am at the D'Ieteren headquarters in Ixelles for the festive opening of 'A Good Place', curated by Pauline Fockedey and Theo De Meyer. This year's Across participants; ACME, Chambresdamies, Dérive, Elise Helm, esque, O.U.V.R.A.G.E.S., variable (x;y) and voor.als.nog will present the result of their residency.

A little sneak peek...

𝐀𝐂𝐌𝐄 makes the Rue du Mail car-free for one day. Creating a monumental entrance square for the Across event.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬 presents an adaptable system out of a reused parachute, questionning the ephemeral nature of architectural interventions.

𝐃é𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 criticises the dominant place vehicles occupy in public space and experiments with alternative forms of appropriation.

𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐦 focuses on the interim character of the building, the role of temporality in architecture and the tension between shell and structure.

𝐞𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐞 explores the relationship between ornament and function and questions the notions of utility and uselessness.

𝐎.𝐔.𝐕.𝐑.𝐀.𝐆.𝐄.𝐒. presents a 1:5 scale model stripped of any architectural programme from one of its ongoing projects. They seek to deepen the notion of infrastructure — a central theme in its pursuit of an objective contribution to shaping resilient urban, peri-urban, rural, and natural environments.

𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 installs a light panel at the entrance that refers to the former cinema marquee, transforming the corporate character of the building into a place of shared experience.

𝐯𝐨𝐨𝐫.𝐚𝐥𝐬.𝐧𝐨𝐠 presents a mobile viewing station which allows them to look at a house they designed but never got to see the final result of.
