Togo, Niger, and Benin Owe Over N25 Billion to Nigeria for Electricity Supply — NERC Togo, Niger, and Benin collectively owe Nigeria $17.8 million (over N25 billion at the current exchange rate) for electricity supplied under bilateral arrangements, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed. In its Third Quarter 2025 report, NERC stated that the three countries were invoiced a total of $18.69 million by the Market Operator for electricity supplied during the quarter, but they only remitted $7.125 million, leaving an unpaid balance of $11.56 million. Legacy invoices from previous quarters amounted to $14.7 million, of which $7.84 million was paid, leaving an outstanding debt of $6.23 million. The combined total of current and past debts is $17.8 million, equivalent to N25.36 billion at an exchange rate of N1,425 per dollar. The international electricity offtakers are Compagnie Énergie Électrique du Togo, Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique of Benin, and Société Nigérienne d’Électricité of Niger. NERC noted that the electricity supplied was generated by grid-connected Nigerian generation companies and delivered through bilateral cross-border power agreements. The commission also highlighted that domestic bilateral customers performed much better, paying N3.19 billion out of N3.64 billion invoiced during the quarter, representing a remittance rate of 87.61%. In comparison, the three international customers only achieved a 38.09% remittance performance. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies remitted N381.29 billion to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc and the Market Operator in Q3 2025, from a total invoice of N400.48 billion, translating to a 95.21% payment rate. The figures were based on reconciled market settlements submitted to NERC as of December 18, 2025.

From when I was about fifteen, men started coming to ask for my hand in marriage. My father, as a loving but worried parent, began to say things like marry, marry, marry. He felt maybe school was not my calling. In his mind, maybe if I married first, I could later go back to school and everything would balance. He was under pressure and he also put pressure on me.

But my mother was different. She kept saying her daughters would never marry wrong husbands. She would say her children would not marry careless men. At that time, I did not understand that she was speaking life into us. Today, when I look at my life and my sisters, I see that there is real power in the words of a parent.

Everything about my early life was slow. I entered university four years after my friends. Some of them were already in final year when I was just starting. My younger sister went to school before me and finished before me. It was very painful. I kept asking God why my own life was like this, why everything was delay and waiting.

But even in that delay, I never failed JAMB. My score was never below two hundred, yet they refused to give me admission. I stayed at home and watched others move ahead. I felt the devil wanted to give me another identity, to push me into a life that was not my own. Still, God was quietly writing my story in His own time.

I grew up as a diplomat child, so we travelled around the world. Later I came back to Nigeria with a big dream in my heart. I wanted to study medicine. I wanted to be a neuroscientist and even a neonatal surgeon, working with tiny babies and the human brain. Science fascinated me so much at that time.

I tried biochemistry for two years, but it dragged me. Carry overs humbled me. I later moved to microbiology and finished with a second class upper degree. On paper I was a science girl. But inside me, something else was calling. I was painting, singing, dancing, acting in school plays. So even while I held my science certificate, my spirit kept whispering that art was my true home.
