2026 Winter Olympics: The Story of Alysa Liu

As a global event, the 2026 Winter Olympics served not just as a sporting competition but as a reminder of how sport can unite people from diverse cultures. Every four years, the Games bring together nations in peaceful competition — celebrating excellence, determination, and the human spirit. For many young athletes and fans, the 2026 Olympics will be remembered as a stage where history was made, barriers were broken, and dreams came true.

One of the most notable stories from this year's Winter Olympics is that of American figure skater, Alysa Liu. The women’s singles figure skating competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics was held on 17 and 19 February at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan, Italy. Alysa Liu delivered one of the most compelling comeback stories in the modern history of the sport, earning the gold medal at this year's Olympic Games.

When Liu first entered the international competitive skating world, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most promising skaters of her generation and representing the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where she placed sixth.

Then came a decision that stunned the skating world. In 2022, at just 16 years old, Alysa Liu announced her retirement from competitive skating. There was no major injury, scandal, or dramatic fallout behind the choice. Instead, her reasoning was strikingly simple: she felt she had already achieved her goals, she was no longer enjoying the sport in the same way, and she wanted to experience a more normal teenage life.

Behind this decision was likely the reality of burnout. From a very young age, Liu had trained at an elite level, carrying the weight of expectations from the media, fans, and the skating community. Rather than continue under that pressure, she made the unusual decision to step away—an uncommon move in a sport where careers are often short and intensely competitive.

What sets Alysa Liu apart is not only her technical skill, but also her presence on the ice. She performs with a distinct sense of joy and individuality, creating a strong emotional connection with her routines while displaying a confidence that resonates with a new generation of fans. Her Olympic performance showcased not only highly difficult elements, but also a bold artistic identity—one that helped redefine expectations in women’s figure skating.

Following her Olympic victory, Liu chose to prioritize rest, skipping the 2026 World Championships. This decision reflected the same thoughtful and self-directed approach that has defined her career—one that is unafraid to challenge convention.

Alysa Liu’s journey is more than a tale of medals and milestones. It is a story about knowing when to step away, when to return, and how to succeed on your own terms. In doing so, she didn’t just win Olympic gold—she reshaped what it means to be a champion.

Hello music fans from ELS! Today, I’m here to tell you about the biggest music competition in Europe — Eurovision!

It takes place from May 12th to the 17th, and this year, it will be in Vienna, Austria. If you haven’t really been following it in the last month, let me help you catch up.

First, the highlight is that Bulgaria will be competing this year! At the end of January, 15 Bulgarian musicians competed for the chance to represent Bulgaria at Eurovision. Since 2022, no Bulgarians have been sent to represent our country due to financial difficulties.

The winner was Dara. She’s a well-known singer from the TV show “X Factor Bulgaria”, loved by the crowd for her energetic music and strong lyrics. But after being chosen, she received an influx of hate from the public.

She was accused of paying the jury so that they would give her higher scores. Fans who voted for different competitors became angry and even tried to prove that the vote had been altered. The official media BNT denied publicly doing any of that but the viewers didn’t believe it and continued spreading hate comments all over the Internet.

Of course, Dara couldn’t stay silent. She shared how those mean comments have affected her and even said that she would give up on competing if that’s what the people want. But despite all of the mean messages, she decided that she won’t give up. In the end, it’s not her that’s the real problem. It’s the media and their decision to not show the votes in real time as they did during the first round.
And if you’re wondering what song is she going to sing, they just chose it - “Bangaranga.” It’s mix of rhythm and strong lyrics, eye-catching choreography and wild spirit, which makes it perfect for Eurovision. So get some popcorn and prepare for the show!
