I’m pro for creating a unified criteria for assistance dog assessment but that will take a lot of resources and time to get in place.

In the meantime can we stop saying that “certification will help” because it is not how it works. In my almost 6 months of having that stupid piece of plastic I’ve only used it once as proof of training in front of and on the 2 airports.
Security guards here don’t know to check for it… managers are not trained enough to make an educated decision. Sad but true. Certification is not the answer.

Patches. Well, f*ck patches my dog has a guide dog handle that I know is very recognisable as working assistance dog gear. A mother was baby talking to my dog and her 10-13 year old child was getting ready to bear hug my dog… in a grocery store. People don’t read. They don’t pick up environmental clues either. Paint the dog as a walking warning if you want to… doesn’t help. Patches are there for the convenience of the handler when the situation escalates to a confrontation and the other person is like “no where says do not pet”.

What needs to happen is:
Teach kids in schools and at home that they cannot pet every dog they see, period. You never know is that cute puppy reactive and how it possibly can harm your child. Reactive dogs need to feel safe on walks too.

Education on the work place and I mean every single one but especially public service establishments. You don’t know when a disabled person will come. You cannot wait until you get fined to educate your workers. No. You most definitely can but why waste those money…

Correct the misinformed. Nowadays I head a lot of stories where handlers get denied access because the previous dog handler misinformed the staff. Certification isn’t mandatory everywhere. Program dogs get certificates as proof of training and people use them without educating the staff, essentially doing more harm than good. We need to

I am sick… I’ve been sick for the last few days… the whole fever, cough and stuffed nose shtick.
My dog…
My dog has been here for the entire time. Giving me snuggles and going to wine to my fiancé when I spike a fever. Nobody taught her that. She saw they make me feel better and made a connection that if she goes to the other room, they’re gonna take her back to the bedroom because she’s supposed to stay in the same room as me and in the meantime will check on me and take measures if needed.

Overall I said everything but the link to autism.
My parents still don’t know I was diagnosed, I’m turning 24 next month.
I tend to be direct and speak what I think which is an autistic trait. I have a strong sense of justice (fairness) which is a part of ASD’s diagnosis criteria.
My actions are directly related to being an autistic person.

Dear parents,

Please, don’t scare your kids with my assistance dog. Pointing out the big, black, “scary” dog and telling your child to behave is unacceptable, especially when we talk about a non-pet-friendly space.

Our dogs (assistance, service and guide dogs) have gone through or are still going through extensive training. That means they are not dangerous to the society.

Some handlers, like me, carry muzzles out visibly. That is not to show that our dogs are vicious predators, it’s because some places will request us to put a muzzle on or our dogs are garbage collectors in their free time, like mine.

Disclaimer: Working dogs are often excluded from wearing muzzles in public spaces. That doesn’t mean it’s illegal to be asked to do so. However it is illegal to deny services to service,assistance and guide dog handler for not doing so. Having a muzzle can interfere with one’s ability to task for their handler.

Not my creation but it’s a very important concept. I had given some advices to a person who asked me.

They demanded that their dog is not trainable. He’s a beagle pup. The handler complains that they’re getting pulled around, he’s barking and he doesn’t respect them. In the meantime they don’t carry treats. They punish only outside.
I’ve trialed the dog for obedience. He loves to obey. He really likes agility in a matter of fact. In one training session I got loose leash walking down on a flat collar with minimum leash pressure.

The difference: I have treats. They are not special… it’s just kibble. I was rewarding him keeping the leash loose. I was rewarding an offered sit.

No this is contrasting to the picture but their dog behaves and listens when I’m around, not to avoid a consequence but to earn a reward.

Be the person your dog wants to work with. Be a play mate!

In the official declining email I received it was wrongfully stated that my autism assistance dog is for “comfort and keeping me calm”, severely undermining the amount of training my dog got to become an assistance dog.
That’s when I pressed the issue to see if they’re aware that they’re breaking the law. For my surprise they were.

Then I had this lengthy conversation with the COO of the company who told me that there was a survey amongst the people who were to come in the office my date. A few of them had allergies and a few just didn’t like the idea of dog in the office. I was also informed that in their eyes this is not discrimination because I can still come, just without my dog. In a matter a fact it would’ve been discrimination if they allowed it because it would’ve created “unwelcome” working environment.

I work from home. I go to the office if I need to pick up something or something’s wrong with my service laptop.

All I asked is 1 day.

Until this mentality goes away equity can’t be fulfilled.

Where did the time go?

If I were to meet my younger self, I’d say a few things:
Be patient with our human. They need some time to adjust.
Don’t play chase when you do things they don’t want you to do… they won’t play chase if you do that.
Recall at every request. It’s for your own safety.
Our human protects you even when you don’t see it.

Please make sure you’re using your chosen gear safely for both you and your dog. If you don’t have a safe gear for the task, buy or make. If you can’t don’t use the task with the chance of harming your dog.
