It's a hot summer for our film Eraserhead in a Knitted Shopping Bag by writer-director Lili Koss, as it continues it's festival journey around the world. Just back from a Portuguese premiere at Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival in July, we're looking forward to our meeting our audiences at SARAJEVO FILM FESTIVAL and a Curta Kinoforum in Sao Paolo.

Our Story

Portokal is an award-winning boutique independent production company that supports emerging talent and acclaimed filmmakers in the development, production and distribution of their author-driven work. We started out in 2000, at the intersection of art and social change, working with disadvantaged youth and producing a number of documentary film and photography projects with the support of The Soros Foundation, CARE International Foundation, Open Society, Bulgarian Photographic Association, and others. Our works have participated in the Venice Biennale, as well as at festivals in Madrid, Dublin, Moscow, Bratislava, Sarajevo and others. We began developing our independent film production unit in 2011, and in 2013/2014, our founding team completed two films that enjoyed international acclaim: The Last Black Sea Pirates (Produced by Agitprop) and Pride. Our current claim to fame is international co-productions for short fiction and feature-length creative documentaries. That said, we are now working to bring that experience into producing European feature films that have a distinct voices and aesthetics.
