Palestinian textile designer Areen Hassan is showcasing the beauty of Islamic art in her first ever exhibition in Bahrain.

The 27-year-old was invited by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca) to feature her textile pieces at the Art Centre in a month-long exhibition entitled ‘By Areen’.

“As an artist and designer, my work engages with Islamic art as a living art that endlessly sculpts daily life,” said the worldwide exhibitor currently based in Dubai.

“My aim is to go beyond the visual perception of Islamic art to investigate an embodied participatory language through which to represent it. My work blurs the boundaries between humans and objects in a totality that brings forth the vibrancy and harmony of Islamic art."

Women from across the kingdom rallied to raise awareness about breast cancer by taking their shot in Bahrain Netball League’s annual tournament.

More than 80 players signed up for the Think Pink tournament held at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club (BRFC) last Sunday to support the charity champions as well as to kick off netball season, which started yesterday.

“This charity is close to our hearts,” said Jo Reed, the leagues president who has been a member since the 1980s and is also a goal shooter for the BRFC. “Sadly we have team-mates, past and present, which have been personally affected by this disease and we feel passionate about supporting causes that enable research and medical advancements in treating all types of cancer.

“Netball is a sport played widely across the globe and since the league began in Bahrain in 1983, it has provided a platform for both expatriate and national women to be involved in a team sport that builds individual confidence, sportsmanship and camaraderie and aids fitness and well-being.”

Children supported by the Future Society for Youth’s Smile Initiative, which raises awareness and provides assistance to young cancer patients and their families in Bahrain, enjoyed a fun day and cooking experience at one of the kingdom’s five-star hotels.

The 25 children, aged five to 12, were treated to a culinary class by executive chef Ramadhan Younis at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, as well as games with hotel staff members and charity volunteers.

“We were very delighted to have Smile Bahrain with us,” said Zaher Al Ajjawi, chief executive officer of the National Hotels Company, the Diplomat’s parent company. “The main focus of this event was for children to enjoy, have fun and learn something new. And, the most important thing was to see big smiles on everyone’s faces and that was achieved.”

There are very few upscale dining experiences, which promise the kind of intimacy with the chef that comes with a seat at a sushi bar – less than a metre away from the master crafter who prepares your meal with delicate attention-to-detail.

This is how Chef Tetsu Yahagi introduced the GulfWeekly team to the concept of the new Sushi Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s newly-renovated and recently-reopened Re/Asian Cuisine.

Along with Chef Hiroyuki ‘Fuji’ Fujino, Chef Tetsu has flown out to the kingdom from the US to craft and curate the perfect Asian fusion culinary experience.

Trusted by celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck as among his ‘sushi experts’, the two make the perfect team – Chef Fuji, 64, brings the discipline of a classically-trained sushi chef, while Chef Tetsu, 44, adds the avant-garde touch that makes a meal at the restaurant so much more than just eating the food.

Former Bahrain-based singer and actress Miraya Varma will be releasing an emotional power ballad worldwide on Sunday to mark World Mental Health Day.

Her first English mainstream track, entitled No One Wants Me, talks about the struggles of mental health, touching on her dark days dealing with depression, as well as letting listeners know that everything is going to be OK.

“Mental health is something of a taboo still in so many countries,” said Miraya, who has Indian roots and has been writing music since she was 11. “Some people don’t have any knowledge it even exists and if they know it does, they feel shameful speaking about it. No one should ever feel that way."

Tradition thread-setter Mhairi Boyle has weaved the island’s craft heritage into her latest art installation in the Bahrain Pavilion at the celebrated Expo 2020, which has kicked off in Dubai.

Her piece What She Sees is comprised of a number of weaved panels created by Bani Jamrah artisans Habib Mohamed Saleh Abdul Redha, Mohamed Saleh Abdul Redha Jaffar, Mohamed Abdul Redha Jaffar and Abdulhusaain Yousif Najem.

“In this piece, I wanted to focus on the land and sea of Bahrain, and this work helped me research and develop dyes which reflected that – seaweed dyes using different seaweed species from around Bahrain to dye material for the panels and also explore different in-land dyes to use – as well as natural fibres found in Bahrain such as palm rope and palm leaves to use within the installation,” Mhairi, 25, told GulfWeekly.

A Bahrain-based expatriate has become one of the elite few Guinness World Record-holders, joining an association that has always been close to his heart in setting a unique record, perfectly suited for the new normal.

Shahzad ur Rehman Haider, who was born and raised in Bahrain, joined 443 members of the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSA), in setting the record for the ‘longest video chain to catch and pass a tennis ball.’

The record was set in May with more than 444 individuals diagnosed with dwarfism, submitting videos of each one catching a tennis ball, apparently from one of their peers, and passing it to another, virtually.

“I have been associated with the DSA since I pursued my MBA there, and I have been fascinated with the Guinness Book of World Records since my parents bought me a big, fat copy of it during my childhood,” the Hamad Town resident with Pakistani heritage told GulfWeekly.

A colourful collective of artists will soon stage a three-day Art for Care exhibit to raise funds for the Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre (BARC).

The Art Attack Krew, which features more than 30 members of different nationalities and artistic backgrounds, will showcase their artwork along with painted portraits and T-shirts of the cats and dogs at the shelter.

The charity sale will be held at Artly’s studio in A’ali, from September 30 to October 2, from 5pm to 11pm.

“Our mission with Art for Care is to support our community through art,” said Krew member Stella Auxtero, who works with different mediums and enjoys portrait expressionism. “We believe that art is not just putting our work and hobbies for all to see. Art is about intent and communication.

Luxury cars today are inching closer to the tech-savvy spaceships we have grown up seeing in shows like Star Trek, and Mercedes’ seventh iteration of its flagship S-Class is the perfect example.

To put the newest Mercedes S500 4matic to the test, GulfWeekly took the technology-packed titan to the road and from the get-go, we were nothing short of impressed.

From the very first glance at the first-class beast, any grumblings about luxury cars all looking the same are put to rest. The S500 has hints of the classic Mercedes look, but augmented with technology that you will probably not find in another car for the next two decades.
