Poverty as a root of children trafficking
Almost half of Burundi’s population is under 18, and 30% of teenagers are out of school, facing increasing challenges due to economic instability, mobility and limited educational opportunities, exposing them to an increased risk of human trafficking.

“Many children flee their homes and end up exploited in the informal economy, where it is even more difficult to trace them while they are highly exposed to multiple risks of violence”, col. Epitace MASUMBUKO, President of the Commission for Consultation and Monitoring on the Prevention and Suppression of Trafficking in Persons.

Rising inflation, socio-economic hardship and global events, as well as the effects of climate change, pushed many young people into essential resources deprivation.

In developing countries, including Burundi, one child in four is forced into child labour, exploitation and trafficking, according to International Organization for Migration (IOM).

It exposes them to an increased risk of human trafficking especially in Burundi where child trafficking embeds in forced begging, sexual exploitation and forced labour, and also extends to neighbouring countries such as Tanzania.

Burundian youth living abroad can contribute to environmental conservation.

On Saturday, March 9, 2024, members of the Youth Committed to Environmental Advocacy Association (YCEA Green) proceeded with reforestation initiatives at the edge of the Ntahangwa River in Bujumbura city, the economic capital of Burundi.

Approximately 1,200 bamboo seedlings were planted at the edge of the Ntahangwa River.

"We have chosen bamboo seedlings because their dense and wide-spreading system of roots can hold the earth in place, particularly in potentially loose soil. This can limit erosion, especially the large-scale sheet erosion that can lead to fatalities and property damage," said Kazungu, a representative of YCEA Green.

This initiative, under the theme "Green Saturday," was piloted and supported by Arsenal Fans, a British-originated team.

Pierre Chanel Kazungu, a representative of YCEA Green, warmly thanked the Arsenal Fans Burundi group for joining and supporting them. He also called on Burundian young people living abroad to get involved in environmental conservation.

" Operation "Green Saturday " was organised to help every burundian wherever they are, be able to preserve environment through various means" said Kazungu.

Abdoul, a leader of the Arsenal Fans Burundi group, called upon other associations to cooperate with each other for collective efforts in environmental conservation.

Additionally, he invited the government of Burundi to sustain such environmental conservation efforts.

The Youth Committed to Environmental Advocacy Association (YCEA Green) also organizes other environmental activities such as clean-up drives, reforestation and flower planting, and coaching sessions.

“The government should increasingly invest in education by providing effective trainings around students. A large number of Burundians are yet cognizant of environment and climate change issues”, said Kazungu.

He urges that not only young people are to be sensitized about environment but also the government official shouldn’t be left behind as decision-makers.

Kazungu goes on saying that the government should send Burundian students to build their capacities in environmental and climate change trainings abroad which further contribute to the country’s development.
