Competing with foreign franchises and operators, Eleazar Relex has built both Erti Kafe and Snips barbershop into growing local businesses - creating jobs for close to 30 locals in the process.

After struggling to find a job upon graduating from UBD in 2018, Eleazar began cutting hair and eventually opened Snips at Bangunan Hj Munchit.

Five years later, he expanded into coffee with Erti at the same location, which has since become a standout in Brunei’s café scene.

With the support of the Brunei Economic Development Board, Erti has expanded to Kontena Park, an F&B incubation programme that offers not only a place to sell but also training and mentoring to help scale.

Hjh Rosnani’s Rose Emma is on track to become one of Brunei’s leading nasi campur brands – with five outlets and growing.

Their journey began with operating school canteens, before opening at The Mall in 2004 – followed by outlets in Serusop, Yayasan, and more recently this year in Kiulap and Kontena Park.

Now running the business with the support of her children, Hjh Rosnani is part of Brunei Economic Development Board’s (BEDB) Elevate programme – designed to support established businesses in expanding their operations.

Her next step: exploring the setup of a central kitchen that can prepare food for distribution across multiple outlets, enabling greater efficiency, consistency, and cost-effectiveness.

Rose Emma was also among the participants at BEDB’s recent MSME Roundtable Series on the food sector, which brought together over 60 public and private stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities in the industry.

How can Brunei reduce shipping costs for MSME exports?

President of National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Brunei Darussalam (NCCIBD) and veteran in Brunei’s shipping and logistics sector, Hj Abd Saman shared his insights during the Brunei Economic Development Board’s MSME Roundtable Series on the food sector.

He highlighted that MSMEs should consolidate shipments and engage directly with mainline shipping operators to negotiate better freight rates.

Bulk exports can significantly lower per-container costs and make Bruneian products more competitive abroad.

Hj Abd Saman also emphasised the importance of avoiding empty inbound containers. When containers arriving in Brunei already carry imports, they can be reused for outbound exports at reduced rates, offering further savings.

Rizqussalam began making sambal tahai from home nearly 10 years ago – and now supplies almost 5,000 packets monthly across Brunei.

With support from Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), their sambal tahai is now being exported to Singapore, and they are set to move into a commercial factory soon.

Led by husband Shahril and wife Zuhairah, the business has helped popularise a traditional Bruneian delicacy – a thick, savoury paste of smoked herring, onions, garlic and tamarind.

Rizqussalam was one of the participants in BEDB’s recent MSME Roundtable Series on the food sector, sharing both opportunities and challenges to help grow the industry further.

The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) hosted the first MSME Roundtable Series on July 11, bringing together over 60 key stakeholders from the public and private sectors to discuss challenges and opportunities for growing Brunei’s food industry.

The food sector is one of five priority areas under the country’s Economic Blueprint for diversification.

During the dialogue, businesses shared pressing issues such as food-related certification and permit processes, sourcing of raw materials, logistics, and manpower.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Finance and Economy Brunei Darussalam and BEDB Co-Deputy Chairperson Dato Hj Khairuddin led the session, calling for concrete follow-up actions and stronger collaboration between all parties.

The roundtable was organised by BEDB in collaboration with NCCIBD, ASEAN BAC Brunei, APEC BAC Brunei, and BEBC Brunei.

BEDB is planning additional roundtables to address other sectors and business challenges, and welcomes ongoing feedback through its Business Helpdesk at 8363442 or 8330520, or via email at [email protected].

Take a closer look at FDI-backed Jets' net-zero, solar-powered aquaculture facility in Serasa, which will use AI technology to cultivate blue shrimp.

The facility features a 10,000 square-metre pond topped with solar panels and is expected to deliver its first commercial harvest for export by the end of the year.

Jets’ latest development complements its existing operations in Brunei, which have been active since 2018 and include a hatchery and broodstock centre.

Jets is an operating subsidiary of a joint venture backed by foreign investors and Brunei government shareholding through the Ministry of Finance and Economy’s Strategic Development Capital Fund. Its holding company, DABANC Group, is headquartered in Hong Kong.

Blue shrimp is Brunei’s leading primary food export, generating over $16 million in 2023 — making up more than half of the country’s nearly $30 million in food-related exports.
