Often described as ASEAN’s gateway to China, Guangxi established the Brunei–Guangxi Economic Corridor in 2014 as a platform to increase cooperation.

Through this framework, partnerships such as Muara Port Company – a joint venture between China’s Beibu and Brunei’s Darussalam Assets – have become integral to boosting connectivity and trade between Brunei and China.

Brunei’s largest solar photovoltaic power plant with a 30-megawatt capacity in Kg Belimbing is slated to launch by the end of 2026, following a groundbreaking ceremony on August 11.

Located on a remediated landfill site spanning 32.29 hectares, the plant will generate 64,440 megawatt-hours of electricity annually for the national grid – enough to power more than 15,500 homes each year.

The project is expected to supply electricity to areas including Subok, Kebangsaan, Mengkubau and Sg Akar.

It will offset an estimated 41,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually – the equivalent of planting 1.87 million trees, removing 5,144 cars from the road, or displacing 219,932 MMBtu of natural gas consumption.

The Belimbing SPVPP is developed by Seri Suria Power (B) Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Malaysia’s Solarvest Group – through its wholly owned subsidiary Atlantic Blue – local partner Serikandi Group Of Companies, and the Brunei government via Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE) Khazanah Satu.

The venture originated from an open Request for Proposal (RFP) process in 2021 by the Brunei government.

Brunei has set a renewable energy target of at least a 30% share of total installed power capacity by 2035, along with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030.

Competing with foreign franchises and operators, Eleazar Relex has built both Erti Kafe and Snips barbershop into growing local businesses - creating jobs for close to 30 locals in the process.

After struggling to find a job upon graduating from UBD in 2018, Eleazar began cutting hair and eventually opened Snips at Bangunan Hj Munchit.

Five years later, he expanded into coffee with Erti at the same location, which has since become a standout in Brunei’s café scene.

With the support of the Brunei Economic Development Board, Erti has expanded to Kontena Park, an F&B incubation programme that offers not only a place to sell but also training and mentoring to help scale.

Hjh Rosnani’s Rose Emma is on track to become one of Brunei’s leading nasi campur brands – with five outlets and growing.

Their journey began with operating school canteens, before opening at The Mall in 2004 – followed by outlets in Serusop, Yayasan, and more recently this year in Kiulap and Kontena Park.

Now running the business with the support of her children, Hjh Rosnani is part of Brunei Economic Development Board’s (BEDB) Elevate programme – designed to support established businesses in expanding their operations.

Her next step: exploring the setup of a central kitchen that can prepare food for distribution across multiple outlets, enabling greater efficiency, consistency, and cost-effectiveness.

Rose Emma was also among the participants at BEDB’s recent MSME Roundtable Series on the food sector, which brought together over 60 public and private stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities in the industry.
