PDS Abattoir will pioneer the sole commercial cattle breeding programme in Brunei through a partnership with Singapore’s Aliyah Rizq Farm

The collaboration will build out Brunei’s livestock value chain – expanding into sheep and buffalo breeding, and establishing labs and feeding programmes to improve productivity and animal health.

Livestock breeding marks a major milestone for PDS – a government-owned company previously focused on slaughtering and meat processing – and supports Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) food strategy to grow high-value local commodities for processing and export.

Aliyah Rizq’s entry into Brunei represents another FDI from Singapore – and a personal homecoming for its COO Datin Nabilah Bagarib, a Singaporean who was raised in Brunei while her parents were working here.

Brunei welcomes a foreign direct investment from Thailand, with Enserv planning to launch the Sultanate’s first sorghum cultivation and processing project by year’s end.

Enserv is positioning as a “super crop” - its grain serves as a low-carbohydrate, micronutrient-rich alternative to rice, while its stalks and sap can be converted into biofuels.

Sorghum requires ten times less water than rice, with each hectare able to sequester up to 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide per crop cycle, making it a relatively climate-friendly grain.

Enserv’s three-hectare pilot project includes a sorghum nursery at the Bio Innovation Corridor and a cultivation and processing site at the nearby Agricultural Development Area (KKP) in Tungku.

Their pilot phase will be key to assessing the project’s feasibility - with a value chain spanning food to renewable fuels. If successful, it will advance to large-scale production.

While Brunei’s unemployment rate dropped from 5.1% to 4.7% last year, continued collaboration between the government and private sector remains key to bringing the figure down further and ensuring the workforce meets industry needs.

Job Centre Brunei’s Jelajah Kerjaya serves as one of the key platforms for the national employment ecosystem – not only showcasing available vacancies, but also offering extensive training programmes for Bruneians, including upskilling and reskilling initiatives, to ensure they have the capabilities to meet market demands.

This year’s , held across all four districts, has drawn 90 companies offering 1,682 vacancies, with the final leg for Brunei-Muara taking place this weekend at Bridex.

In 1999, after years of saving from her day job, Poh Yee opened Taurean Cafe - and despite being laid off in 2016 - she doubled down and opened Taurean Bakeshop & Cafe.

In Brunei's evolving F&B scene, Poh Yee’s diligence and discipline have become the hallmark of Taurean’s consistency - outlasting trends and downturns by focusing on delivering quality with fresh and wholesome ingredients.

For her steadfastness, Poh Yee won the Women Entrepreneur Award at The Proudly Brunei Business Awards (PBBA) last year - and for her growing operations, which now include branches at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) and Brunei International Airport's departure hall, as well as exports to Singapore - she received the Food Award this year.

The Proudly Brunei Business Awards is Brunei’s national business awards, organised by Brunei Economic Development Board to recognise business excellence and entrepreneurial achievement.
