A juvenile bar-tailed godwit set a world record in October 2022 by completing the longest non-stop flight for any animal, traveling 13,560 kilometers (8,435 miles) from Alaska to Tasmania, Australia, in just 11 days. The bird was tracked using a small satellite tag, and while it took an unexpected turn south, its arduous journey of 11 days and 1 hour demonstrated the incredible endurance of the species, surpassing the previous record.
The bird flew a route further south than the typical migration destination for its species, which is New Zealand. This "wrong turn" led it to Tasmania, but also resulted in an even longer flight, setting a new record.
To sustain such a long flight, the bird would have lost a significant portion of its body weight, as godwits cannot land on water to feed. If they land on water, it is often fatal because they do not have webbed feet to get back into the air.
