The largest Jazz & Blues festival in Latin America, The Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival, once again brings an amazing line-up from June 4-7, featuring Mark Lettieri, Stanley Jordan, Taj Farrant, Bixiga 70, and one of our favorites: the Canadian funk powerhouse The Brooks from Montreal! We had the chance to speak with bassist and co-founder Alexandre Lapointe about the upcoming performances at the festival.

UK soul outfit Mamas Gun has dropped their sixth studio album: Dig! The sound of the album is truly authentic, organic, and deeply soulful. Recording took place with engineer/studio owner Neil Innes directly onto 16-track analog tape at All Things Analogue Studios in Leeds, UK. Singer and composer Andy Platts (also known for his project Young Gun Silver Fox), keyboardist Dave Oliver, guitarist Terry Lewis, bassist Cameron Dawson, and drummer Chris Boot: five musicians in one room recording the songs live!

The Pimps of Joytime are one with funk as can be heard on their new album Magic Moves. The band has been grooving since their inception around 2005. First out of bustling Brooklyn, where the first four albums were recorded. After that, the band relocated to New Orleans, the city where funk originated. The new album was recorded with some outstanding musicians from the crescent city.

We were fortunate to speak with the one and only Brian J Gitkin about the band and the new album.

Paris-born soul singer and songwriter Tiwayo just dropped his new album Outsider, and it sure is funky!

Tiwayo gets his inspiration from the southern part of the USA. Once on a road trip to Memphis, a local, older Cajun bluesman heard him sing and was struck by the contrast between his youthful face and gravelly, soulful voice. Amused and impressed, the bluesman called him “The Young Old.” Back in France, Tiwayo took the initials T.Y.O. and transformed them into the single, evocative word Tiwayo, which has stayed with him ever since. The former album The Gypsy Soul of Tiwayo was recorded in 2019 in Georgia and released by Blue Note. For the new album Outsider, he headed to Austin Texas to work with Adrián Quesada of the Black Pumas and a fine group of local musicians. The result is the captivating album Outsider.

We had the opportunity to ask Tiwayo a couple of questions about the new album and the release tour.

The second album by hammond organ soul trio Parlor Greens dropped today! Last week The New Funky attended Vinyl Ju**ie Radio’s pre-drop listening party and that turned out to be a unique session. After that, Hammond player Adam Scone was so kind to elaborate on a couple of topics one-on-one with us. 👀👇🏼

We have included songs of the album in The New Funky Spotify playlists and the vinyl album will soon be available in our record store where more titles from Colemine Records can be found. As part of their release tour, Parlor Greens will also visit Europe in the coming month.

Judging by all the good music that comes out of Dordrecht, you can't help but conclude that there must be a vibrant soul and funk scene in this Dutch city where five rivers meet (they get wet feet every now and then as you can imagine). If you delve into it a little more, you will find out that two men in particular are the driving force behind the well-known names such as Laura Vane & The Vipertones, Soul Snatchers and Phil Martin's Mystical Funk. We are talking about childhood friends Ton van der Kolk and Tim van der Holst (aka Phil Martin).

Ton plays bass and owns booking agency Music & More. Tim plays drums and is a studio producer. Not only with their bands they have put Dordrecht on the soul & jazz map. They also brought soul and funk heroes to their city for legendary concerts like Sharon Jones & The Dapkings, Budos Band, Lee Fields and for collaborations with Dr Lonnie Smith and the Brazilian jazz funk outfit Azymuth.

Phil Martin's album Mystical Funk Il has just been released, 25 years after part 1. It is a fascinating album full of musical influences from acid jazz to Latin to afrobeat. We had the opportunity to ask Tim a couple of questions. 👀👇🏼

Michelle David & The True-tones have released their third album: Soul Woman. Actually, it's already their seventh if you count the four Michelle David & The Gospel Sessions albums. If we go even further in the past, the collaboration between guitarists Onno Smit and Paul Willemsen with Michelle David goes back to the influential deep funk outfit Lefties Soul Connection. In between, Onno and Paul made a number of hits with the roots rock band Beans & Fatback that have been used more than 50 times in American television series, films and commercials (such as Use Me for Suits, Sally the Shape for Shameless).

In Concerto Recordstore in Amsterdam, the band gave an in-store performance this weekend to celebrate the release. The New Funky was able to ask Paul Willemsen a few questions before and after the gig. 🔥👇

The soul-funk trio Soulive released a new album! Flowers was recorded at Flóki Studios, set against the rugged seaside backdrop of Iceland. The band let their creativity flow on the remote Tröllaskagi Peninsula. It’s the first full-length studio album of the band after 15 years.
