Boxer, Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and fearless MMA professional, featherweight has faced some of the toughest opponents in the fighting world, in events like Pride FC, UFC, WEC, and Strikeforce, totaling more than 50 professional fights.

A student of the respected master Pedro Sauer, Jeff Curran gives back everything he learned at his Jiu-Jitsu academy in Illinois. His learning as an athlete and fighter has been a vital factor in the growth of his submission-only Jiu-Jitsu event, with a simple and powerful motto: “Athletes first, always.”

At 48 years old, the MMA “Big Frog” fought from 1998 to 2016, and told GRACIEMAG.com what he has learned, and taught, as the organizer of the Jeff Curran Invitational (JCI) event.

Master Sérgio Ignacio began his career in Rio de Janeiro, at his father’s private security firm. His father was an honorable Air Force lieutenant and former boxer and mixed martial arts fighter in Pará.

Sérgio quickly learned that the streets presented unpredictable scenarios, with physical confrontations and high-risk incidents where success was never guaranteed. Therefore, he sought something more reliable than weapons and wiser than luck: knowledge.

Instructed by some of the most prepared and experienced instructors in all fields, Master Sérgio Ignacio became an encyclopedia of techniques, tactical and strategic defense knowledge, after decades of firsthand experiences that can now help people during complex police operations or in situations as commonplace as a night on the subway.

The renowned police commissioner, now an active coral belt Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Florida, has experienced numerous high-risk situations, such as in 2016 when he nearly lost his life in an operation in the alleys of Vila Cruzeiro, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, after a gr***de bounced and landed between his feet. He survived the shrapnel thanks to the teachings he had learned, combined with the composure he possessed under maximum pressure, a quality honed on the streets and on the mats.

“It wasn’t my time,” reflects the master, who has become a solid bridge between martial arts and public and private security. Looking back on his career, Sérgio Ignacio reflects:

“I am an experienced police officer, and if I have survived this far, it is thanks to the excellent instructors and training partners I have had since the 1980s. What I learned in active service, I make a point of passing on in BJJ Defense classes, a course for the benefit of martial arts instructors and teachers, public and private security agents, and people of all ages in civil society. A self-respecting instructor wants their students to be better than they were, and that’s how I always try to teach. As a friend says: I don’t save money, I’m going to save knowledge?”

🎯 5 lessons I learned by winning the American National, by

1- Trust the process and trust my coaches

When I arrived in the U.S., I competed in a few tournaments and lost. My coach, Helio Barthem, told me to trust the process, trust in the work that we would do, and we would get to be a champ. I followed exactly what they said, and as a result, I became the champion of the JJWL Worlds and the American National.

2- It’s not enough to be technically and physically well-prepared if your mindset isn’t strong

To reach the top, the three pillars – mind, physical conditioning, and technical level – must be balanced. I strengthen my mindset with the help of sports psychologist Cacio Zanon, who helps me develop mental strength and feel confident during competitions.

3- I learned not to put my opponents on a higher pedestal than myself

I always respect my opponents, but everyone can be beaten – including me. If I think I’m not capable of beating a certain opponent, I’ve already lost before even stepping on the mat. I believe I can beat anyone in my division because I work hard for it.

4- In order to win an important championship, you need to feel that you deserve it

You must feel that you’ve worked hard and that you deserve to stand on the highest place on the podium. When you show up to a competition knowing you could have trained more and didn’t do enough, your performance might not be the best. I train two to three times a day, and because of that, I feel I’m deserving of being a champion.

5- Be grateful to everyone who supports you

I’m very grateful to my family, my coaches, and my training partners at Checkmat Temecula. I have the best possible training there, and everyone puts in effort to help me. My entire preparation is done at Checkmat Temecula, and once a week I go to Checkmat Headquarters to complete my training, where I find many sparring partners who help me a lot in my preparation. I also thank my sponsor, Nutrishop Temecula, who has supported me greatly in continuing to compete.
