This is one of those phrases you hear all the time, but it really is true. Learning jiu-jitsu takes time, and while some people enjoy rapid success and seem to pick it up quickly, for most of us it’s not that easy. Goals such as a belt promotion or a tournament can be great to work toward, but they’re just stops along the way on a journey that could realistically go on forever. Be prepared to have good days, and not so good days. You will hit plateaus, experience breakthroughs, setbacks, more breakthroughs, and this will continue for as long as you practice jiu-jitsu. Move Your A**. Many beginners focus on pushing or pulling with their arms and legs and forget that most movements come from the hips. The shrimp is a fundamental movement for shifting your hips and creating space, which is really important for playing guard and escaping bad positions. Bridging can be used to escape pins and to finish submissions. Learn to move your hips and you’ll unlock a variety of techniques. You'll find yourself using it for escapes, guard retention, sweeps, and more. So don’t forget to move that a$$.
