"Yes, I’m fat.
And I’m also strong.
And somehow, people still think those two can’t exist at the same time.
A comment at breakfast.
A remark while kayaking.
Small sentences that have a big impact.
Even though I thought I shook those comments off, they stayed with me.
They followed me into the water.
And suddenly, I wasn’t surfing anymore, I was trying to proof myself.
I’ve noticed this pattern before.
On the tennis court, I often step into the court too early instead of staying behind the baseline.
Not because I’m slow.
But because somewhere deep down, a part of me still assumes I won’t get to a short ball time.
My tennis coach then reminds me: "stay back. I know you think you're not fast enough, but you are."
I’ve gotten to the short balls, many times.
Here is the thing with comments about bodies.
They don’t just land once.
They quietly shape how we move. How free we feel and how much joy we allow ourselves.
I don’t surf to get strong.
I don’t kayak to prove anything.
I don't play tennis to show you that I can do it.
I move because it brings me joy.
I can be fat and strong.
Fat and sporty.
Fat and joyful.
You know my name, not my story. So before commenting on someone’s body (no matter which shape): pause.
