Good news: we just got a bronze ray for Brazil during the awards in Lima, Peru, in the category typedesign/self-initiated project.

Top-Tip is a 2021 interpretative revival of an art-nouveau genre of metal types which appeared in 1902 during the Judgenstil in Germany, but which relate in fact to earlier bold/condensed wood types.

The kickstart of the project was the Café Floresta lettering on the coffeeshop sign from 1974 at the ground floor of the Copan building by Oscar Niemeyer in São Paulo.

Two variants were created, Top-Tip Metal + Top-Tip Nouveau. The Metal variant takes direct inspiration from the Cafe Floresta lettering, which is actually a spiky reinterpretation of Tip-Top Reklameschrift by Julius Klimkhardt Typefoundry in Leipzig (1902), whereas the Nouveau version is a softer companion more related to Wodan, a similar design by D. Stempel Typefoundry in Frankfurt (also from 1902).

Hello! We are Font FM, the type design practice and design studio of Fernando Mello based in São Paulo, Brazil. We will be launching a website in the near future and will be sneak peeking here very occasionally a few of the ongoing projects we are working on in the meantime, as well as some inspiring type related content.

Our DM is always open for all sorts of custom font and lettering jobs, as well as logotype lettering refinements and the like, so feel free to drop us a line anytime for any enquiries or just to say hello! You can also look for us as on Twitter and other relevant social media.

Fernando Mello has been involved in the creation of hundreds of typefaces and alphabets in the past 2 decades during his time as a typeface designer for Fontsmith and Monotype in London, gathering great experience and a keen eye for creating letterforms.

👉🏻The FM logogram is set in MelloSans, Fernando’s first sans serif design from 2004-2005 (which got redesigned in 2009 for the identity of Tipos Latinos 2010, and soon, more than a decade later, will be one of our first commercial releases 🤫). The logogram pays a passionate tribute and takes its inspiration from Wim Crouwel/Total Design and their groundbreaking and minimalist SM mark set in Univers 65 for the Stedelijk Museum in the 1960s, one of the finest identities in graphic design.

Olá! Somos a Font FM, o estúdio de typedesign de Fernando Mello em São Paulo, Brasil. Lançaremos nosso site num futuro próximo, e mostraremos neste espaço ocasionalmente algumas das coisas nas quais estamos trabalhando, bem como conteúdos inspiradores relacionados ao type design.

Fernando esteve envolvido na criação de centenas de famílias de tipos e alfabetos nas últimas duas décadas, durante sua estadia como type designer para a Fontsmith e a Monotype em Londres, na Inglaterra, reunindo anos de experiência e um olhar bastante refinado para a criação de letras e alfabetos.

Nossa DM está aberta para todos os tipos de serviços customizados ou relacionados ao desenho de tipos, letras, alfabetos, fontes e letterings, assim como refinamentos tipográficos em logotipos — sinta-se a vontade para entrar em contato ou pra dizer um oi. 👉🏻 O logograma FM é composto em MelloSans, a primeira sem serifa desenhada por Fernando em 2004-2005 (que ganhou um redesign em 2009 para uso na identidade do Tipos Latinos 2010, e agora, mais de uma década depois, será um dos nossos primeiros lançamentos 🤫). O logograma é um tributo aficionado é que se inspira no trabalho inovador e minimalista de Wim Crouwel/Total Design para a marca SM do Stedelijk Museum em Amsterdam nos anos 60, uma das criações mais icônicas do design gráfico mundial.
