In a brutal act of repression, London police arrested 522 people on Saturday at a pro-Palestine action. Protesters were protesting against the continued funding of the IDF and the UK government’s decision to ban the group Palestine Action. The arrests marked one of the highest numbers of arrests ever recorded in the British capital, with over half of those arrested being over the age of 60.

While those arrested have since been released, the arrests are a ghastly example of the violent repression that Palestine activists face worldwide for protesting the brutal genocide in Gaza and the starvation of millions of Palestians, all while imperialist powers continue to give diplomatic cover to the Zionist state and arm it to the teeth. Starmer’s “concerns” over the conditions in Gaza are hollow posturing, especially as he chooses instead to criminalize those standing for Palestinian lives.

Stop with the repression of pro-Palestine activists!
Down with the genocide! End the blockade on Gaza now!

The plan aims to expel Palestinians from Gaza City before launching a ground offensive, intended to complete the genocide they have been carrying out for almost two years. The plan was questioned by the army chief and the families of hostages, and rejected by international organizations and the UN human rights chief. It must be stopped in the streets.

Union activist and Amazon Labor Union (ALU) founder Chris Smalls was brutally attacked while in the custody of the Israeli Army. He was detained alongside 20 other activists leading the Handala Freedom Flotilla to the shores of Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid and break Israel’s blockade and starvation of the Palestinian people.

According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), Smalls was “physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals. They choked him and kicked him in the legs [...] This level of force was not used against other abducted activists.”

International pressure and the attention on the civilian-led attempts to break the blockade has forced Israel to quickly release and deport the Handala’s activists, but the violence used against Smalls — the only Black activist on the ship — shows how the racist and Zionist state of Israel treats those who stand up for Palestinian lives and against the genocide. Even as it claims to “pause” its attacks on Gaza to allow aid to enter the strip, the Israeli army continues its assault, killing dozens of people a day and targeting those who come to collect aid. For its part, the Trump administration gives cover to the brutality of the IDF, refusing to comment on Smalls’s detention after calling the aid effort a “selfie flotilla.”

While the U.S. media stays quiet on Smalls’s beating, the California Faculty Association — a union of 29,000 educators in the California State University system — has denounced the attack, calling on other unions and workers to stand up for Smalls and against the genocide.

As Smalls and the remaining activists await deportations from Israel, we demand that they are immediately and safely delivered home and denounce this violent attack on Smalls and all those who fight for an end to the genocide.

Four adjunct faculty members at Brooklyn College have been fired over the recommendations of their departments. All four faculty have been involved in the Palestine and the CUNY PSC is saying that this has all appearances of an “ideaological purge.” This comes a little over a week after Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez testified before Congress, touting his disciplining of 4 faculty, multiple students and increasing policing at CUNY.

This attack on free speech and the movement for Palestine opens the doors for more attacks on students and faculty, as well as on the right to protest. These four faculty are the canary in the coal mine for deeper and stronger attacks. We must stand firm against these firings. If they touch four of us, we all rise up!

We encourage unions, all workers, students and people concerned with the attacks of the Trump administration to join us at the gates on Bedford Avenue directly outside Brooklyn College on Thursday, July 31 at 4:00pm to protest these firings and demand their reinstatement!

Tomorrow the House Education and Workforce Committee will hold yet another hearing on antisemitism at universities. The far-right politicians leading them don’t care about Jewish people, students, or education; they use these hearings to attack the Palestine movement, q***r people, Muslim people, the Left, and universities.

California farmworker, Jaime Alanís, is the first known person to be killed during one of the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration raids. His death is on the hands of the Trump administration and ICE.

These are clear attacks on immigrant workers. The United Farm Workers put out a statement saying “These violent and cruel federal actions terrorize American communities, disrupt the American food supply chain, threaten lives and separate families.” All unions and workers must take up the fight for immigrant rights and against ICE and Trump’s attacks.
