BOTSWANA TRUCK DRIVERS PETITION GOVERNMENT OVER FOREIGN EMPLOYMENT, LOW WAGES

Labour and Home Affairs Minister has received a petition from the Botswana Truck Drivers Association, which is calling for urgent government intervention over the employment of foreign truck drivers and low wages within the transport industry.

The Association urged government to prioritize the employment of qualified Botswana truck drivers, improve working conditions, and address concerns affecting the welfare of local drivers. Members argued that greater protection of local employment opportunities is essential to ensure sustainable livelihoods for Batswana working in the sector.

Receiving the petition, Minister Mokgware reaffirmed the Government's commitment to protecting local jobs. He stated that work permits for foreign truck drivers have not been renewed since the end of 2024, emphasizing that government remains focused on ensuring employment opportunities are first made available to qualified citizens.

The Minister further called for continued cooperation between government, industry stakeholders, and truck drivers to resolve the challenges facing the trucking industry and to promote fair labour practices that benefit both employers and employees.

Botswana Ignites Fierce National Debate Over Motion to Legalize S*x Work

A growing debate over the possible legalisation of prostitution in Botswana has divided public opinion, with citizens, social workers and industry participants expressing opposing views on whether regulation could protect vulnerable people or create new social challenges.

Supporters of legalisation argue that prostitution already exists and that regulation could improve safety, healthcare access and protection from abuse. A social worker, Mpho Kgosikala, told Paragon International News that ignoring the issue does not make it disappear.

“People involved in s*x work need protection, access to healthcare and support systems, regardless of personal opinions about the industry,” she said.

A s*x worker who requested anonymity and was identified as Naledi said regulation could help improve safety for those already involved.

“Many people work in unsafe conditions because they fear judgement and arrest. A regulated system could provide better protection,” she said.

Meanwhile, some members of the public remain strongly opposed. Kefilwe Motsaakoma, a mother from Molepolole, said legalisation could negatively affect families and communities.

The debate comes as Botswana continues to grapple with questions surrounding human rights, public health, morality and economic hardship. Legal experts say any move towards legalisation would require extensive consultation and major changes to existing laws.

LAWYER JAILED FOR LIFE OVER GIRLFRIEND'S MURDER AND ATTEMPT TO HIDE CRIME

JOHANNESBURG – The South Gauteng High Court has sentenced 30 year old attorney Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Mahlako Malebo Rabalao, and attempting to conceal the crime.

The court heard that Mpisi murdered Rabalao in March 2023 before setting her body and her Mercedes Benz vehicle alight near her home in Midrand, Gauteng, in an attempt to destroy evidence and prevent investigators from uncovering the truth.

Prosecutors argued that Mpisi deliberately took steps to cover up the killing after the murder. The court was told that his actions, including efforts to conceal the crime scene, were aimed at misleading authorities and escaping accountability.

During the trial, the State presented forensic evidence, cellphone records, witness testimony and expert analysis that linked Mpisi to the murder. The evidence presented before the court proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was responsible for Rabalao’s death and the subsequent attempts to obstruct justice.

Mpisi was also convicted of defeating the administration of justice and malicious injury to property. The court found that the seriousness of the offence, together with the attempt to hide the crime, justified the imposition of a life sentence.

The case attracted widespread public attention after Rabalao was reported missing. Reports indicated that Mpisi had publicly expressed concern and participated in efforts to locate her before investigators later linked him to the crime.

The sentencing brings an end to a high profile case that has drawn attention to the fight against gender based violence and the importance of ensuring accountability for perpetrators, regardless of their profession or status.

GABORONE – Paragon International News has recorded one of the most challenging financial periods in its history after generating just US$0.84 (approximately P10.00) in revenue over the past 30 days, according to the agency's Editor In Chief, Pako Ramasukujane.

The Botswana founded international news agency, which maintains editorial operations in Pakistan, India, South Africa, Nigeria and Namibia, is now operating with what its leadership describes as a "skeleton operation" following a prolonged financial downturn.

Speaking on the agency's current state, Ramasukujane said the financial crisis has severely affected the organisation's ability to support its reporters and correspondents despite its extensive international readership.

«"For the past 30 days, Paragon International News generated only US$0.84, which is approximately P10.00. It is a painful reality for an organisation that reaches millions of readers every month, but we remain determined to rebuild."»

He said the agency's financial decline can largely be traced to legal battles that weakened its operational capacity and continue to affect its recovery.

«"The legal battles we faced in previous years delivered the hardest blow to this organisation. Those challenges disrupted our growth, drained our resources and their effects are still being felt today."»

Founded in Botswana as a youth driven media organisation, Paragon International News previously created opportunities for young journalists across several countries. However, the worsening financial situation has forced the organisation to scale back some of its international and local operations.

«"We have had to withdraw from some countries and local areas because we simply cannot sustain those operations under the current financial circumstances. These are difficult decisions, but they are necessary for our survival."»

Despite the financial strain, the agency says it continues to attract more than 10 million readers every month across 33 countries, demonstrating that audience growth has remained strong even as revenue has declined.

Ramasukujane said the organisation remains committed to expanding projects that could strengthen its long term sustainability.

JAPAN ESTABLISHES FIRST CENTRALIZED INTELLIGENCE AGENCY SINCE WORLD WAR II

Japan has officially established the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), creating the country's first centralized intelligence agency since the end of World War II in a landmark overhaul of its national security system.
