Tim Rodland when asked about overcoming the challenges when building RoRo - “It’s who can push through the pain and come out on the other side. It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be hard. But if you make up your mind that I’m not going to give up, you will find your way.”

Desmondo takes the timer. He beats his engineering deadlines just to buy back hours for shoots. So 60 seconds should be nothing.

Meet the man refusing to pick a lane. Desmondo🇧🇸 was shy, not photogenic, and only said yes to his first shoot because the photographer was talented enough to get him free photos out of it. Four years later: Calvin Klein. Nike. Cartier. Rimowa. Baha Mar. Atlantis.

But the campaigns are the second job. Desmondo is a civil engineer first and he will not let you rank it any other way. He grew up between Cooperstown, Abaco and Landrail Point, Crooked Island, where the mailboat ran late and drinking water meant catching rain. He went on to become the top engineering student at the University of The Bahamas, pulled there by knowing exactly what his islands lacked. Roads. Bridges. The unglamorous infrastructure that decides whether a settlement grows or empties out.

When both careers took off at once, everyone around him started asking which one he would drop. “I have never seen anyone else do it,” he tells Wybe, “but maybe through a little delusion, I decided that I can be the first, and so I will just figure it out and create a way.”

Nike is still the one that gets him, because his father raised him on Michael Jordan VHS tapes. For any young Bahamian who thinks this is not for people like us: “Kill that mindset. Bahamians can be anything we want to be.”
