DOUBLE GOLD FOR THE BAHAMAS

Sprintstar Steven “Speedy Stevie” Gardiner and Shaunae Miller-Uibo have proven once again they are the fastest in the world in the 400m and dominated the track in their individual race to win the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — making The Bahamas doubly proud.

Bahamians everywhere held their breath Thursday when Gardiner hit the track and stumbled out of the starting block and after he moved into overdrive and sailed by his competitors to take the gold in an impressive win, Bahamians went into a celebration frenzy.

Twenty-five-year-old Gardiner proved his supremacy in the race by bringing home the gold in the 400m at the 2019 World Championships, so it was only natural for him to do a repeat this year at the Olympic games with a season’s best time of 43.85 seconds.

Among those sending congratulations to the athletic superstar was Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, noting in the country’s elation in a statement and that Steven had held off a world-class field to bring the gold medal home for The Bahamas — our first medal at this year’s Olympic Games.

“Having won gold at the World Championships and then at the Olympics, Steven has demonstrated that he is without question the best in the world at the 400m,” he said.

“His accomplishments are making him at a young age already one of the great athletes in our country’s history.

“The Bahamas is proud of Steven Gardiner. He gave Bahamians across our island chain a moment of joy today during this difficult time due to the pandemic.”

Prime Minister Minnis congratulated Gardiner, his family and his coaches on behalf of the government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for such an historic win.

Executive chairman of Sandals Resorts International Adam Stewart also congratulated the Olympic winner and extended a complimentary luxury vacation to Gardiner in full VIP style.

Stewart had been gifting complimentary all-inclusive stays to Caribbean athletes who achieve podium finishes since the start of the Tokyo Olympics, which included luxury ground transfers from their homes and, in Gardiner’s case, a Rolls-Royce, full butler service and accommodations in a top suite at a Sandals Resort for a number of nights that would be determined by the athletes themselves.

Stewart noted that Gardiner has made history for Bahamas and cemented his name in the history books. He said the resort chain is extremely proud of Gardiner and all of the Caribbean athletes and cannot wait to host them when their schedule allows.

But Gardiner was not to be undone. The following day, Miller-Uibo secured her gold at the 2020 Olympics — becoming the second woman in history to repeat as Olympic champion in the 400m.

Twenty-seven-year-old Miller-Uibo pulled away from the pack with her pink hair gliding in the wind and won the women’s 400m in 48.36 seconds — setting a new national world record and beating out the favoured American Allyson Felix who went home with the bronze.

Hot on the heels of Miller-Uibo’s win, Prime Minister Minnis issued a statement, remarking that “our small island nation has woken up for a second consecutive morning to joy at the success of one of our athletes at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

“Shaunae Miller-Uibo has defended her 400m gold medal won at the 2016 Olympics in a dominant performance. She is now a back-to-back gold medalist at the 400m.”

The nations chief noted that Miller-Uibo has been a global talent from her days as a junior athlete.

“Through hard work, sacrifice and discipline she has become one of the great track athletes of her generation. The entire Bahamas is celebrating with Shaunae and her family at this historic win,” he said.

The prime minister also congratulate her on behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas.

“Shaunae and Steven have shown the world that great things come from this small island nation. We will celebrate with them when they return to The Bahamas,” he said. “This is a great day for The Bahamas!”
