Tourism Development Corporation and Bahamas Development Bank Launch Home Sweet Home Program to Boost Vacation Home Market

The Tourism Development Corporation, in collaboration with the Bahamas Development Bank, has launched the Home Sweet Home Program, an incentivized grant initiative aimed at boosting participation in the vacation home market. Announced at a town hall in Georgetown, Exuma, on September 28, 2024, the program has an initial funding of $2.2 million—$1 million from the Tourism Development Fund and $1.2 million from the Bahamas Development Bank.

Applications will be accepted from October 7 to November 18, 2024. This program aims to empower Bahamian property owners by offering a combination of loan and grant funding to enter the vacation home market. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation Chester Cooper emphasized the program's potential to enhance local tourism, fill hotel room shortages, and encourage Bahamian entrepreneurship.

To qualify, participants must be Bahamian, fully own a property designated for vacation rentals, and engage in the technical support provided by the Tourism Development Corporation. The program targets two types of property owners: those needing less than $10,000 and those requiring more than $10,000 to enter the market.

Interested property owners can register online at tdcbahamas.com. They must submit a building assessment, recent appraisal, or video description of their property, which will be inspected by an authorized agent. Participants are also required to complete a virtual Vacation Home Renters Orientation Training Program.

SBDC Awards $100,000 in Grants to 14 Businesswomen in Grand Bahama

GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas — In a move dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs with a special emphasis on empowering women, the Small Business Development Centre (SBDC) has awarded $100,000 in grant funding to 14 female entrepreneurs in Grand Bahama.

This grant is part of the SBDC’s 2024 Women Entrepreneurs Initiative, which has so far awarded over $600,000 to 83 female entrepreneurs across The Bahamas, from Grand Bahama to Inagua.

The recipients were honored at a press conference held at the COLLAB Centre on September 5, 2024.

The businesses led by these women span a range of sectors, including beauty services, education, and entertainment, all of which are crucial to Grand Bahama’s economy.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey, congratulated the female entrepreneurs for their remarkable innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. She also praised their participation in eight sessions of the Digital Divas Course.

“This grant is not merely about financial support; it’s about acknowledging women’s contributions to our economy, recognizing the immense potential of female entrepreneurs, and fostering an environment that drives innovation among Bahamian women,” said Moxey.

Minister Moxey highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to empowering Bahamians through consistent budget allocations for small business development and the launch of initiatives aimed at supporting businesses in the blue, green, and orange economies. These efforts aim to support small business owners and streamline access to funding.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Access Accelerator Small Business Development Centre for their vision and dedication to nurturing the growth of women entrepreneurs in Grand Bahama and across The Bahamas,” she added.

SBDC Executive Director Samantha Rolle applauded the female entrepreneurs for their resilience and reaffirmed their crucial role in the economy. She also announced that the SBDC is enhancing its local team to ensure its programs, resources, and support are accessible and impactful in Grand Bahama.

“You are the daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends who are shaping our future generations. Today, we celebrate your tenacity, vision, drive, and your contributions to the future of Grand Bahama,” Rolle said.

Rolle expressed optimism about the future of entrepreneurship in Grand Bahama, excited about the island’s prospects.

“As leaders, innovators, and change-makers in our community, I look forward to the impact you are set to make. Use your experience from this Program as a springboard for new opportunities in your entrepreneurial journey.”

Carnival Hosts Free Workshops for Bahamian Businesses

Carnival Corporation will kick off a series of free workshops today, offering the Grand Bahama business community a valuable chance to learn about developments at Celebration Key, especially the opportunities available to both established and emerging small businesses.
The workshop series, starting on August 22, aims to help local entrepreneurs and business owners understand the latest developments at Celebration Key and explore the various opportunities open to them.
Carnival's four-month Supplier Readiness Workshop series, running through November 14, will equip participants with the knowledge needed to compete in the bidding process for the project and provide insights into the sourcing and selection process.
Celebration Key, set to open next year, will need suppliers, and workshops are scheduled on August 22, September 12, September 24, October 17, and November 14 at the Grand Lucayan.
With a $100 million pier extension and a $600 million destination investment, Celebration Key is expected to have a significant impact on the Grand Bahama community. Seventy-five percent of the outlets will be Bahamian-owned, with 70 restaurants and retail outlets planned. The project is anticipated to create over 700 permanent local jobs, including approximately 400 Bahamians hired directly by Carnival Corporation.

Bahamas Development Bank and UN Women Launch $2M Low-Interest Programme

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) owned, led by, or of benefit to women, youth, and persons with disabilities will have access to 0 to 2 percent low-interest loans starting this month.
The Bahamas Development Bank (BDB) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women Multi-Country Office - Caribbean (UN Women MCO Caribbean) recently signed a partnership agreement to provide the new, dynamic concessional financing to agriculture, sustainable tourism, and creative businesses.
UN Women, through project funding from the Joint Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Fund, will be investing 100,000 USD into the low-cost loan product developed by BDB.
Nicholas Higgs, BDB’s Managing Director, described the financial product as a “game-changer” for The Bahamas.
“By providing low-interest loans to MSMEs, we are empowering local businesses to thrive, innovate, and contribute significantly to our economy. This initiative not only supports economic growth but also promotes social inclusion by targeting underrepresented groups such as women, youth, and people living with disabilities. It is a pivotal step towards a more equitable and prosperous future for our nation.”
Mr. Higgs added, “Loans are useful for business growth. This new product allows businesses to scale up production, improve products, stay competitive, enter new markets, or take advantage of growth opportunities.”
Loan applications will be accepted until 13 September 2024. The concessional financing allows businesses to access the 0 to 2 percent interest rate for the first two years. Financing beyond the two-year period or exceeding $100,000 will be subject to standard BDB interest rates.
The loans are made possible through blended financing, a mechanism that uses public and development funds to subsidize interest rates on traditional loans taken by the Bahamas Development Bank.
Tonni Brodber, Representative UN Women MCO Caribbean said, “For many businesses, access to loans can mean the difference between staying small or achieving significant growth, driving innovation and economic development in their communities.”
“A major focus for this fund is supporting women and young entrepreneurs in overcoming existing financing gaps to support their full and equal economic and social participation. Recognizing that women are less likely to take out loans when compared to men, closing the gap between the need for financing and the access to financing is crucial for women entrepreneurs to overcome economic challenges, enhance their financial independence, and enable women to contribute to the overall economic development and job creation in The Bahamas.”
The Bahamas Development Bank and UN Women have been in partnership through the Joint SDG Fund Building Back Equal through Innovative Financing for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Programme since 2022. It is being jointly implemented in The Bahamas and Bermuda by BDB, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors in Bermuda, and four United Nations agencies including UN Women, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The programme is scheduled to run until 1 October 2024.

Congrats to Abaco Neem Ltd. Bahamian businesses

An amazing Environment for healing.
We are so grateful for the privilege of living in a space where there is minimal pollution, noise and chaos! Waking up to the song of birds, the crows of roosters and the clucking of hens keeps us in touch with nature in a very real way. We will soon add sheep to our farm and very excited to have a Cuban employee who has recently joined our team with experience in managing animals. Osiel and Alok our Indian employee get along famously and compliment each other as one has a background in hospitality and the other in farming. It is a real relief to finally have live-on-farm help. Nick and I managed for close to 2 years basically on our own. It is a labour of love and one that has helped to keep us in good health. As you know, health is wealth and it has been our focus since day one of planting the Neem farm over 30 years ago.
