The Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC), along with national sporting federations, today announced the Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation National Team for the Pan American Games in Toronto.
The 53-member team – 36 athletes and 17 officials – will compete in five sports at the Games, scheduled for July 10 – 26. The Bahamas will be represented in swimming, athletics, boxing, tennis and gymnastics. It is the first time that a gymnast would be included on the team, said BOC president Wellington Miller.
“We are very proud now that a new discipline has been added to the sports that are going off to represent The Bahamas, gymnastics," Mr. Miller said. "Some time ago, the Bahamas Olympic Committee decided to put its weight behind the smaller sports that are coming up and being formed in The Bahamas. Today is a reality, today is a proud day for us to have a gymnast on our team.”
Mr. Miller congratulated the Bahamas Gymnastics Federation and their president Barbara Thompson. He said he was very familiar with the hard road the sport travelled to reach the milestone, and he promised that the BOC would continue to help small federations.
