RUB bans mobile use in classrooms from October

After years of allowing students to carry and use mobile phones freely within campuses, the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) has now decided to impose a complete ban on their use during academic hours.

A new directive issued by the Office of the Vice Chancellor on 22nd September 2025 states that, starting 1st October, students across all RUB colleges will no longer be permitted to use their phones during lectures, tutorials, guest sessions or public talks.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has cleared most of its long-standing backlog of cases, even as it struggles with one of the highest attrition rates in the civil service. The ACC currently has only 134 employees, far below its approved strength of 165.

His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, son of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, was today joined in marriage with Ugen Choden Namgyel, daughter of Mr. Singye Namgyel and Mrs. Tshering Lhamo.

The Royal Wedding was held at Dechencholing Palace in Thimphu on 25 August 2025. The Royal Couple received the sacred blessings of His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and His Holiness the Je Khenpo.

His Royal Highness is a graduate of St Peter’s College, University of Oxford, where he earned his degree, and holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD. His Royal Highness serves the Kingdom with distinction as President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee since 2009, Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia, and a Member of the International Olympic Committee.
