We are not lumps of rock, and so we naturally feel the pain of those affected by such tragedies. The great Dzogchen master Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche gave an example: if we see a child struck by a bus, we rush to help without considering whether the child is known to us or comes from a good family. Such spontaneous compassion is uncontrived, uncalculating, and immediate, and arises as a natural activity of our innate Buddha-nature.

Across Bhutan today, an unusual sense of anticipation is gathering. In homes, offices, monasteries, schools and communities, conversations are increasingly turning towards one historic date-November 1, 2026. With barely two months remaining, the country is not merely counting down to the completion of a construction project. We are preparing to witness 108 sacred structures rise together in a single day - an undertaking without precedent in our national history and perhaps without parallel anywhere in the world. For Bhutanese, it will be a moment of belonging, gratitude and trust made visible.

In 1950, when an airplane crashed in the hills of Chapcha, most saw only wreckage. Zimpon Jouchu saw windows. He salvaged the cabin windows from the downed DC-3 and fitted the acrylic in his home in Thimphu, giving his family a source of light and their first clear view of the world. This act of ingenuity was characteristic of the man born Rinchen Dorji but known as Zimpon Jouchu, a figure defined by his skill, discipline, and ingenuity spirit.

More than 400 delegates from over 60 countries gathered this week at Dungkar Dzong for what Bhutan hosted as the worldโ€™s first โ€œconscious food summitโ€. The idea sounds lofty. For the average farmer, or even the average Bhutanese, it may not be easy to understand as delegates speak of building a spiritual connection with food, of food systems requiring inner and outer changes, and of conscious eating.

Applaud the Department of Revenue and Customs. Requiring every QR payment to declare itself business or personal is a good reform that costs nothing and reveals everything. It turns every phone into a tax ledger and will undoubtedly contribute towards better tax collection. Yet before the screws are tightened, the Department of Revenue and Customs should widen the taxable group.
