THE BUSHMAN'S HUT

The San or The Bushman are known for their survival and hunting skills, wealth of indigenous knowledge of the flora and fauna and their rich cultural traditions. The San people did not build permanent structures because they moved around from place to place, following a nomadic way of life. They stayed in huts made out of wood and grass called Mogwafatshe in Setswana and in some instances they made their homes in caves or under rocky overhangs.

The establishment of Tswana dynasties came about a result of a breakaway from the Tswana-Sotho group in the 17th century. Oral traditions explain these migrations as responses to drought or junior brothers breaking away to become independent chiefs. The three brothers Kwena, Ngwaketse and Ngwato broke away from their father Chief Malope, to establish their own followings in Molepolole, Kanye and Serowe respectively.

Oral tradition teaches that Ngwaketse was the first to establish his own tribe and set his Kgotla which forced his elder brother brothers to establish their own as Tswana believes are against such setup, other records states the Tswana dynasties started growing when Kwena and Hurutshe migrants founded the Ngwaketse chiefdom among Khalagari-Rolong in south eastern Botswana by 1700. After 1750 this grew into a powerful military state controlling Kalahari hunting and cattle raising and copper production west of Kanye. Meanwhile other Kwena had settled around Molepolole and a group of those Kwena henceforth called Ngwato broke away from their elder brother to further north at Shoshong. By about 1770 a group of Ngwato called the Tawana had even settled as far north west as Lake Ngami a region occupied by Yeyi.

The Bangwato Tribe was born after a conflict between Ngwato and his elder brother Kwena Morulaoesi near the Ngotwane River which forced Ngwato to ran away northward of the now Botswana. Kwena commanded a regiment to follow, capture and bring Ngwato. After a while running from the Bakwena regiment Ngwato saw a thick bush and decided to hide in it. The regiments noise awoke a duiker that was in the bush and upon hearing their noise, the duiker ran away, the Bakwena regiment then chased after the Duiker thinking it was Ngwato only to realize later that could not have been him. Ngwato then later searched for his followers and shared the story of how Duiker saved his life and they then decided from that day that they and their decedents would treat Duiker as a sacred animal
