Choppies Warns of Profit Decline Ahead of FY2025 Results

Choppies Enterprises Limited has warned investors to brace for a sharp earnings drop, with profit after tax for the year ended 30 June 2025 expected to plunge by up to 35% from last year’s P136 million. Continuing operations are forecast to fall by as much as 28%.
The slump is linked to losses from the sale of its Zimbabwe business, foreign exchange hits on IFRS 16 lease liabilities, soaring diesel costs, and a higher 31% tax rate. Last year’s once-off gains from selling Mediland also boosted prior earnings, making this year’s results appear weaker by comparison.
Despite the hit to the bottom line, Choppies expects headline earnings, EBIT and EBITDA to grow, reflecting stronger core performance. The retailer says it is focused on driving profitability in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia, turning around its hardware and Liquorama units, and maintaining financial discipline.
Choppies will publish its full FY2025 results around 22 September 2025. The group is listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange and the JSE Limited.

Absa Bank Botswana Half-Year Profit Slides 27%

Absa Bank Botswana’s profit before tax plunged 27% to P412 million for the half-year ended June 2025, hit by soaring costs and higher impairments. Net profit fell 25% to P319.7 million, despite a slight 0.3% uptick in total income to P1.13 billion.
Operating expenses jumped 16% to P647 million, pushing the cost-to-income ratio to 57.4%. Impairments surged to P66.7 million from under P1 million last year.
Customer deposits closed at P18.94 billion, while total assets held steady at P25.47 billion. The bank maintained a solid capital adequacy ratio of 19.04% and strong liquidity buffers.
No interim dividend was declared as the bank braces for a tight second half, focusing on capital preservation, revenue diversification, and supporting customers through a challenging economy.

S&P Global Ratings Cuts Botswana’s Credit Rating to ‘BBB’

S&P Global Ratings has downgraded Botswana’s long-term sovereign credit ratings from ‘BBB+’ to ‘BBB’, citing weakening fiscal and external positions driven by falling diamond revenues. However, the short-term foreign and local currency ratings were affirmed at ‘A-2’, with the outlook remaining negative though still within investment-grade territory
The agency warned that subdued global demand and lower diamond prices are weighing heavily on the minerals-dependent economy, threatening fiscal revenues and export performance. It cautioned that without strong policy adjustments, government debt will continue rising while foreign reserves remain under pressure.
Despite the downgrade, S&P Global Ratings noted Botswana’s strong institutional framework, relatively low (but rising) debt burden, and democratic stability as credit strengths. The agency said the recent extended mining deal with De Beers until 2054 could bolster the sector’s prospects, but stressed that economic diversification remains crucial to improving the outlook.

MultiChoice Botswana Commissions Three New Local Films from Botswana Storytellers

Botswana’s film industry is gearing up for another major milestone as MultiChoice Botswana, through Mzansi Magic, has commissioned three new local movies set to premiere on DStv at the end of 2025.
The films will be created by three of Botswana’s most celebrated storytellers Afentse Fenny Lekolwane, Johnson Otlaadisa, and Tumelo Chaba building on the historic success of Mokwalo, Khumo ya Dinaledi, and Buying the Cow in 2024, which marked the first-ever Botswana-made films to air on Mzansi Magic.
Otlaadisa, the creative force behind Makgabaneng and Lights Off!, brings decades of experience shaping Botswana’s screen industry. Lekolwane, a pioneer since her 2004 debut Flat 101, has produced over 20 titles and earned recognition as a Mail & Guardian Top 50 Change Maker. Chaba, founder of Freeze Frame Pictures, blends local authenticity with global polish, having worked on campaigns for Rolls-Royce and Apple TV.
This new slate signals MultiChoice Botswana’s continued commitment to championing homegrown talent and giving Botswana stories a powerful platform on the continental stage.
