Let’s talk about money. Specifically, let’s talk about the time I tried to adult by budgeting with a spreadsheet, only to discover that “avocado toast” was not, in fact, the reason I couldn’t afford rent. Inflation, that sneaky gremlin, had turned my grocery list into a Choose Your Own Adventure book where every ending is: You starve. This is the vibe of The Irony of Inflation, a poetry collection that’s less “Ode to a Nightingale” and more “Ode to My Empty Wallet.” It’s like if Shakespeare wrote a sonnet about your student loans.

Take the poem “A Pound of Flesh for Africa’s Debt.” Here, the poet drags Shylock out of 16th-century Venice and plops him into a modern IMF meeting. Instead of demanding literal flesh, these lenders—armed with spreadsheets and predatory interest rates—carve their dues from schools without desks and hospitals where aspirin is a luxury item. The poem’s genius lies in its audacity to compare structural adjustment programs to a Shakespearean blood pact. It’s The Merchant of Venice meets The Wolf of Wall Street, with a side of colonial hangover.

The poem’s lenders wear “polite smiles,” which, let’s be real, is the corporate version of a vampire asking permission to suck your blood. Debt here isn’t just numbers; it’s a sentient vine strangling a continent. What starts as a “seed for tomorrow’s harvest” morphs into a Kafkaesque forest of IOUs. The irony? These debts were supposed to fertilize growth, not turn into a botanical nightmare where the only harvest is austerity.

I felt this. Not on a continental scale, obviously (my crises are more “why does gas cost my firstborn?”), but in the way money morphs from tool to tyrant. Once, I naively took a “low-interest” loan to fix my car. Fast-forward two years: I’m pretty sure the bank owns my left kneecap. The poem nails this surreal dance between hope and exploitation—how financial “solutions” often feel like being handed a parachute that’s actually a cement backpack.

The Irony of Inflation thrives on such contrasts. It’s a collection that stares down spreadsheet-wielding Shylocks and asks, “But what’s your excuse?” It’s angry, yes, but also darkly witty—like a stand-up routine at a protest rally. The poet doesn’t just lament empty desks in schools; they highlight the absurdity of a world where kids learn algebra in rooms stripped of chairs because some hedge fund manager needs a third yacht.

Yet, for all its bite, the book isn’t a nihilistic rant. It’s a call to remember that economies are stories—ones we can rewrite. Sure, my budget spreadsheet is a tragedy, but maybe tomorrow’s chapter includes a plot twist where we stop letting Shylock write the rules. After all, if inflation can rise, so can we. Just maybe skip the avocado toast.

In the end, the collection’s real magic is making finance human. It turns abstract terms like “quantitative easing” into visceral tales of survival. So next time your rent spikes, channel the book’s defiance. Unplug Shylock’s calculator. And remember: even in a world where money talks, poetry shouts back.

Let’s be real—life today is a pressure cooker. If you’re young, it feels like you’re always running behind. Social media bombards you with “overnight successes,” making you wonder why you’re still struggling to figure things out. You scroll past 23-year-old CEOs, fitness models with perfect abs, and couples who look like they stepped out of a romance novel. Meanwhile, you’re sitting there, trying to muster the energy to send one more job application or just get through the day without feeling completely overwhelmed.

But here’s something that The Best Version of You: The Journey to Discovering Your Greatest Asset in Life by Kandjou gets absolutely right—your greatest asset isn’t what you own, how much you’ve achieved, or what others think of you. It’s you.

It sounds simple, almost too simple. But think about it. Everything around you—your relationships, your work, your happiness—flows from the person you are inside. If you feel lost, uninspired, or stuck in a cycle of comparison, no amount of external validation will fix that. You can get the dream job, the fancy car, the perfect Instagram aesthetic, but if you don’t know who you are and why you matter, it will never feel like enough.

Kandjou challenges you to dig within. Not just to set goals, but to understand yourself first—what drives you, what you’re passionate about, what areas you need to improve. Because self-worth isn’t something the world hands you; it’s something you develop. The world tells young people they need to have more, do more, be more. But this book reminds you that success starts with becoming a better version of yourself, not just a busier or more impressive one.

And that’s powerful.

Because when you focus on self-improvement, the world shifts. You stop seeing obstacles as dead ends and start viewing them as lessons. You stop defining yourself by other people’s timelines and start embracing your own path. You stop seeking approval from the outside and start building confidence from the inside. Even God, as Kandjou emphasizes, looks at who you are more than what you have.

So, to the young person who feels out of options—pause. Stop looking outside for the answer. The key isn’t in someone else’s success story, it’s within you. Your resilience. Your ability to grow. Your willingness to commit to a better version of yourself.

Because once you do that? The rest will follow.

There’s something terrifying about looking in the mirror and seeing beyond your reflection - past the carefully practiced smile, the "I’m fine" replies, and the neatly curated version of yourself you present to the world. It’s easy to pretend, to plaster over the cracks with work, laughter, or distractions. But the truth is, we can’t outrun ourselves.

Self-awareness is not a luxury; it’s survival.

When it comes to mental health, the real battle isn’t just against anxiety, depression, or whatever name the textbooks give to your struggles. It’s against the silence. The pretending. The exhausting effort to convince yourself and the world that you're okay when you're not. Society, with its well-meaning but often misinformed opinions, has trained many of us to see mental health struggles as a sign of weakness. “Snap out of it,” they say. “Just be positive.” As if a serotonin deficiency can be cured by good vibes alone.

But here’s the thing: knowing yourself - truly sitting with your emotions, understanding your triggers, and acknowledging your pain - is an act of rebellion in a world that tells you to suppress it. Self-awareness strips away the shame. When you know what’s happening within you, when you can say, "This is anxiety," or "I am experiencing depression, but I am not my depression," you take back your power. You move from being controlled by your emotions to observing them, processing them, and ultimately, managing them.

It’s not easy. Self-awareness demands honesty, and honesty can be uncomfortable. It forces you to confront your patterns, your coping mechanisms (healthy or otherwise), and the painful roots of your struggles. But it also arms you with clarity. And clarity is what helps you take the right steps - whether that means seeking therapy, setting boundaries, or simply giving yourself permission to feel.

The biggest enemy of healing isn’t mental illness itself. It’s stigma. The fear of being judged, of being labeled, of being whispered about. But stigma loses its power when we refuse to be ashamed. When we stand in the truth of our experiences and say, "Yes, I struggle. And that’s okay."

So here’s my challenge to you: dare to know yourself. Sit with your emotions. Question the narratives you’ve been told about mental health. Ask yourself if you’re truly okay, and if the answer is no, don’t be afraid to say it out loud. Because your struggles don’t define you - your willingness to face them does.

And that? That’s strength. 💙
