OPEN INQUEST TO PROBE TSHEPI CASE

Government has announced that an open inquest into the death of Tshepi will proceed with immediate effect following the conclusion of investigations by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Providing an update on the matter, Minister of State President, Defence and Security, Moeti Mohwasa said the DPP had completed what he described as an exhaustive evaluation of the available evidence.

Mohwasa revealed that the case will now be formally registered before the Magistrate’s Court, where an inquest will be conducted in public. He explained that the presiding magistrate will independently assess all evidence presented during the proceedings and determine whether a prima facie case exists against any individual and whether criminal charges should be instituted.

The minister further emphasized that the inquest proceedings will be fully open to the public, allowing for transparency as the matter progresses through the courts.

BOGOLO SELLS BOTSWANA’S DIAMOND DREAM IN VEGAS

Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, is taking Botswana’s diamond story to the world stage after making waves at the JCK Show in Las Vegas.

Kenewendo used the global jewellery event to push Botswana’s new “Development Diamonds” vision a plan aimed at turning the country’s diamond wealth into jobs, business opportunities and long-term economic growth.

Speaking during interviews at the event, Kenewendo said Botswana can no longer rely only on diamonds and must use profits from the industry to grow other sectors of the economy.

The minister also spoke about Botswana’s renewed deal with De Beers, saying government wants diamonds to do more for ordinary Batswana.

Meanwhile, De Beers announced a $75 million investment into the Diamonds for Development Fund, which will help fund Botswana’s diversification drive. Former African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina has been appointed to lead the fund.

Kenewendo further said Botswana is positioning itself to become Africa’s top diamond trading hub following the successful hosting of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses summit in Gaborone.

She also backed calls for stricter separation between natural and lab-grown diamonds, insisting the famous 4Cs grading system should remain for natural diamonds only.

Kenewendo says Botswana now wants natural diamonds to be seen as “family stones” passed down through generations.
