Boteti river near Chanoga is all but dry. Boat activities are now proofing to be impossible due to the low water levels. This development is having a negative impact on tourism related activities for tour operators.

The 2023 annual floods did not reach Boteti river at all. The low rainfall at the Angolan Highlands suggest that the 2024 floods will not reach the Thamalakane river in Maun. This could result in the Boteti river drying up completely.

The two consecutive year floods have largely sustained local tourism in Maun and at Chanoga thanks to good inflows from Angola.

Flood waters from Angola are showing a slow but steady recovery attributed to the late rainfall as indicated (graph reading as at 12th April 2023, courtesy of Namibia Hydrological Services).

Thamalakane river is drying up at most locations across Maun. It will be another 8-12 week wait for the flood waters to reach Maun.
