When it comes to holding a microphone, proper technique can significantly impact sound quality and overall performance. Here's a guide to the right and wrong ways:
Now keep in mind that microphones are different and so are sound engineers, but I still think there are correct ways to do things regardless.
Proper way to hold a microphone:
1. Grab: Hold microphone by the handle (bottom), not near the grid.
2. Distance: Hold the microphone about 1 or 2 inches from your mouth for a clear sound.
3. Angle: Tilt it slightly (about 45 degrees) towards your mouth to avoid bursting sounds of occlusive words.
4. Stability: Keep a firm but relaxed grip and keep your hand still to avoid manipulation noise.
Wrong ways to hold a microphone:
1. Microphone head grab: Holding the microphone by the grid can block out the sound and cause a muted audio.
2. Too Close or Too Far: Holding it too close can cause distortion, while too far can result in weak audio.
3. Covering the Microphone with Hand: Wrapping the microphone with your hand can affect the sound quality and create feedback.
4. Aim Away from Mouth: Holding the microphone at a sharp angle away from the mouth reduces sound capture.
