*🗣️ STUDENT VOICES SILENCED OR DELAYED? A REFLECTION ON TODAY’S “UNAPPROVED” DEMONSTRATION*

Today was meant to mark a turning point. *Student Power Botswana*, a bold movement led by Eric Karabelo and a coalition of SRC presidents from across the country, was set to peacefully petition the government on an issue long overdue — the promised student allowance increment to P2,500.

But that didn’t happen.
Not because students backed down.
Because the system said “Not today.”

The Botswana Police Service (BPS) officially denied the application for the march, citing a national event occupying officers. Legitimate? Perhaps. Convenient? Most definitely.

Here’s the twist — long before becoming president, Advocate Duma Boko once defended petitioning as a rightful democratic tool. Today, under his leadership, we’re seeing peaceful action postponed due to “timing.”

And students are left asking:
📌 *Are our rights seasonal?*
📌 *Must justice wait its turn in a national calendar?*
📌 *When promises are made to the youth, how long are they expected to hold their breath?*This isn’t just about allowances. It’s about trust. It’s about power dynamics between a rising, educated youth and a leadership that once spoke our language — but now struggles to listen.

This was not a protest that failed.
It was a movement paused.
But only for now.
