𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀!

Did you know Cornrows were used to help enslaved people in the U.S. escape slavery? Enslaved people used cornrow style braids to create maps and deliver messages through their hairstyles. Enslaved people were not allowed to read, so they found ways to pass information through cornrow hairstyles without raising any suspicion of authorities.

The term cornrows are believed to have originated in Colombia, South America where Benkos Bioho, a king captured by the Portuguese from Africa, came up with the idea to have women create maps and deliver messages through their hairstyles. They were also called “canerows” to represent the sugarcane fields that enslaved people worked in.

The curved cornrows represented the roads they would use to escape. Also, people used their hairstyles to keep gold and hide seeds to help survive after escaping slavery.
