MINISTER MOTSHEGWA DISCUSSES THE PROPOSED NATIONAL DECENTRALISATION DRAFT POLICY

Since January 2025, the Ministry of Local Government & Traditional Affairs has been consulting with councils on the proposed National Decentralisation Draft Policy, aimed at shifting key powers from the central government to local authorities. Council chairpersons and mayors have been tasked with drafting five-year strategic roadmaps to guide this transition and strengthen local ownership of development. The question that arises is: how ready is Botswana for decentralisation and will it lead to more responsive and accountable local governance?

“Any act of violence against our officers is not only unacceptable, it is a direct threat to national stability and the rule of law,” declared Member of Parliament for Maun West, Honourable Carter Kainangura Hikuama, as he strongly condemned the rising incidents of attacks on law enforcement personnel.

Hikuama, who is also an Opposition Whip in Parliament, has condemned the recent violent attack on a police officer in Mmathethe, describing it as a threat to national stability and the rule of law. The 27-year-old officer was struck in the head with an axe while questioning a suspect.

With help from the suspect’s parents, police arrested two individuals, who are expected to appear in court next week. The injured officer was treated and discharged the same day and is recovering at home.

Hikuama called for stronger protection for officers and urged the public to reject violence and support law enforcement.

Speaking at the official opening of the 51st Ghanzi Show, Boko emphasized the need to restore agriculture to its rightful place in the economy.

He praised the evolution of the Ghanzi Show—from a local initiative in 1974 to a major agricultural platform with cross-border influence. This year’s event runs under the theme “Sowing Seeds of Innovation for Agricultural Transformation"
