UDC CANDIDATE PROBED FOR STEALING BALOT PAPERS

Thamaga Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident involving Umbrella For Democratic Change (UDC) parliamentary candidate, Kopano Rannatshe.

The 54-year-old allegedly took ballot papers and left the polling station during advanced voting at Thamaga Junior Secondary School over the weekend.

Thamaga Police Station Commander, Moses Kwarare, says the investigation is ongoing, and the possible charge is "taking election documents without permission." Additional charges may follow based on the findings. Rannatshe remains in police custody.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has called for a re-election at ten polling stations in the diaspora following logistical challenges during advance voting last Saturday. The IEC confirmed that the re-run is scheduled for October 26, 2024, citing a shortage of resources as the main cause of the disruption.

IEC Chairperson Barnabas Nyamadzabo addressed the media on the issue, reassuring the public that efforts are being made to ensure smooth operations during the re-election process. In a separate briefing, IEC Secretary Jeff Siamisang revealed that three polling stations within Botswana will also undergo re-elections, attributing this decision to irregularities encountered on voting day.

Among the affected local stations is Thamaga-Kumakwane, where chaos unfolded after a candidate reportedly grabbed ballot papers and fled. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which briefly halted the voting process. No arrests have been made so far, but the police are said to be closing in on the suspect.

The IEC has urged voters to remain patient and assured the public that all necessary measures will be put in place to prevent a recurrence of these issues.
