Amandala The AMANDALA, Belize's leading newspaper, is a biweekly newspaper published on Tuesdays and Friday

AMANDALA, a biweekly newspaper published on Tuesdays and Fridays, was founded as an organ of the United Black Association for Development (UBAD), which emerged on August 13, 1969. Even after UBAD was divided and later dissolved in 1974, AMANDALA remained. The newspaper began as a stenciled sheet (looking somewhat like a newsletter) after UBAD members and supporters subscribed $250 in donations. Pu

blisher Evan X Hyde also received a small donation from his alma mater, Dartmouth College in the USA. So began what would later become the country’s premier source of printed news. AMANDALA has been the nation’s most read newspaper since Belize’s Independence in 1981. The success of the organization has also come from a team of dedicated reporters, editors and office personnel, supported by the newspaper’s publisher, Evan X Hyde. AMANDALA is located on the same premises as three other related entities: KREM, the first independent radio station which broke government monopoly over the airwaves on November 17, 1989; KREM TV established in 2004; and the Library of African and Indian Studies (renamed the Dr. Leroy Taegar Institute of Learning in 2014).

Tut Bay FC & Yo Creek United FC enter NAIC football finals

By William Ysaguirre
(Freelance Writer)

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Aug. 14, 2025

Tut Bay FC and Yo Creek United FC won through to the National Amateur Inter-District Championship (NAIC) finals, as both teams enjoyed big wins in the 2nd leg of their semifinals on Sunday, August 10.

At the Isidoro Beaton Stadium on Sunday night, the second leg of the semifinal between Tut Bay FC and Napoles FC ended deadlocked in a 3-3 aggregate tie in regulation, after Napoles posted a 2-0 victory on goals by Collin Moody (17’) and Jarvin Campos (32’). (Tut Bay had won the first semifinal leg by a 3-1 score.) The spot in the final was therefore decided with 30 minutes of extra time, where Tut Bay cruised to a 3-0 win with goals from Raymond “Juny” Gentle (102’ & 120’) and Esmond “Bagga” Sanker (113’).

At the People’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Liam Reyes’ hat trick (23’, 54’ & 80’) led Yo Creek United to a 4-2 win over Vikings FC in the 2nd leg of their semifinals. They also profited when Vikings’ defender Alexander Pavon (57’ OG) deflected the ball into his own net. The Vikings’ 2 goals were by Dejmari Pop (69’) and Diego Rodriguez (90’).

The Vikings had won the first semifinal leg by a 2-1 score; but with their 4-2 loss in the second leg, they fell short by a goal in the aggregate score, in which Yo Creek prevailed, 5-4, for a +1 goal differential and a spot in the finals.

Upcoming championship final:

Saturday, August 16
6:00 p.m. - Tut Bay FC vs Yo Creek United at FFB Stadium

(AMANDALA Ed. Note: There was a bit of controversy in the Tut Bay vs Napoles semifinal, where, as we understand it, the Napoles management complained that their team was short-staffed due to some players’ participation with the Napoles FC team in the PLB match against Verdes FC on Saturday night before their NAIC semifinal game on Sunday evening against Tut Bay FC. There was allegedly a reneged agreement with FFB officials to accommodate the movement of players between Napoles’ amateur and professional teams. Napoles fans believe their players were overwhelmed in the semifinal extra time due to fatigue, having only one substitution available.)

*Tut Bay FC won, 3-0, in extra time after a 3-3 aggregate tie in regulation vs Napoles FC in semifinals.

*Yo Creek United FC won by a 5-4 aggregate score in the semifinals vs Vikings FC
