In Case You Missed It:
The 2024–2025 conch fishing season officially closed on Sunday, May 25th. All fishers and the public are reminded that, in accordance with the regulations, no conch fishing or possession of Queen conch meat is allowed until the season reopens on October 1, 2025.

Closed seasons are critical for giving marine species like the Queen conch time to reproduce and replenish their populations. By respecting these regulations, we all help protect Belize’s marine resources for future generations.

Court of Appeal Upholds $185K Judgment Against GOB in Landmark Constitutional Rights Case

Belize News On The Go – Exclusive Legal Analysis.

In a precedent-setting decision with far-reaching implications for administrative law and constitutional rights, Belize’s Court of Appeal affirmed a Supreme Court ruling ordering the Government of Belize (GOB) to pay former Prime Minister Dean Barrow $185,000 for violations of his fundamental rights under Sections 6 and 20 of the Belize Constitution.Key Legal Findings1.Breach of Natural Justice:

The court found the 2021 Commission of Inquiry (COI)—convened by PM John Briceño’s administration to investigate alleged improprieties in government asset sales—committed a "blatant violation" of Barrow’s right to procedural fairness.

2.Damages Breakdown:•$125,000 (Compensatory): For proven reputational harm and emotional distress caused by the COI’s "pungent" public allegations of favoritism and potential criminal conduct.•$60,000 (Vindicatory): A constitutional penalty reflecting the seriousness of the state’s breach—a critical deterrent against future abuses.

3.Expungement Order: The court struck all adverse findings against Barrow from the COI report, preserving only neutral administrative recommendations—a rare judicial rebuke of executive overreach.

Why This Ruling Matters•Legal Precedent: Reinforces that commissions of inquiry must comply with due process, even for high-profile figures.•Government Accountability: Confirms that the state cannot weaponize COIs to damage reputations without affording respondents a fair hearing.

•Costs Implications: Taxpayers now bear the full financial burden of the judgment plus Barrow’s legal fees—a costly lesson in constitutional governance.

Expert Analysis"This ruling is a watershed moment. "The court has drawn a bright line: No one—not even a former PM—can be condemned unheard. The vindicatory damages send a clear message: Belize’s Bill of Rights is not optional."Next StepsWith the appeal dismissed, GOB must now comply with the judgment. Legal observers warn that failure to pay promptly could trigger contempt proceedings or further litigation.
