President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali to Visit Belize

Belmopan, January 12, 2026.

The Office of the Prime Minister announces that H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, will undertake a State Visit to Belize from February 1 to 3, 2026.

During his visit, President Ali will address a Joint Sitting of Parliament coinciding with the inauguration of the newly renovated National Assembly building. President Ali is the Lead Head of Government in CARICOM for agriculture, and in an effort to strengthen regional cooperation, investment, and trade, will undertake a visit with the productive sector. It is expected that a number of cooperation agreements will be signed.

President Ali will also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Dame Froyla T’zalam, Governor-General of Belize, and Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize.

Belize and Guyana have historically shared strong and robust bilateral relations grounded in the commitment to regional solidarity, development, and integration.

Belize Strengthens Borders with Biometrics

The Government of Belize has received approximately US$250,000 in equipment and hardware from the Government of the United States under the new Biometric Data Sharing Partnership (BDSP).

The official signing involved representatives from the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise, and the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in enhancing border security and international cooperation.

Through the initiative, Belize’s Ministry of Immigration will introduce fingerprint-based biometric technology at points of entry, enabling officials to conduct background checks using the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s extensive biometric identity database, strengthening national security and border management.

A total of 113 public officers participated in the Strengthening Public Expenditure Management (SPEM) Project, a nationally tailored Public Financial Management Certification Programme. The programme strengthened participants’ knowledge and skills in key areas such as accounting, budgeting, treasury operations, and internal auditing.

This initiative, made possible through a partnership between the Ministry of the Public Service and the University of Belize, represents an important step toward enhancing accuracy and accountability in Government Ministries and Departments.
