Cops Caught On Camera Punching Man In Chokehold

Police are under scrutiny tonight after they were caught on camera punching a man who had already been subdued. It happened at the Hattieville checkpoint at 6:40 AM on Saturday morning.

A driver passing by captured four police officers - apparently QRT and Special Branch - detaining a single male. One of them had him subdued in a chokehold - while the other officer threw multiple blows at him, hitting him repeatedly.

After this gratuitous beatdown the detained man remained conscious and was held by the police.

The reason for the detention is not clear at this time.

Turtle Tagging Continues In Gales Point

We caught up today with the turtle man from Gales Point Kevin Andrewin. This summer he has been working with various US and Canadian university students to tag turtles - and after he sent us a video of just such a tagging - we asked him about it:
Andrewin says that one turtle they tagged in 1997 was still coming to nest in the Gales Point area up to very recently.

Police & Politicians Handing Out Fake Jansport Bags?

A & R store - they say their “prices make the difference” - but in the rush of get to school giveaways that price has resulted in a negative difference for them.

That’s because A & R is the country’s sole authorized importer for Jansport school bags. That’s a high quality, long lasting brand out of the US - but it’s also relatively high cost. A new bag at A & R sells for just north of 70 dollars - which compares favorably to prices on Amazon where iT sells for 38 US dollars.

Which is why we scratched our heads when on Friday - for example - we saw Superintendent of Police Aaron Gamboa giving out Jansport’s like 5 cent sweets. And then we saw them again on Sunday in Cayo north with the PUP Area Representative.

The owner of A & R saw them too - and he was fuming.

Now, of course, saying that brand name fakes are available in Belize is just about as surprising as saying you found a spoon in the kitchen - but A& R says it matters to them they’re losing business on a premium back to school product. We spoke to the regional manager via Zoom.
A & R says it has a number of authorized re-sellers countrywide.

No Direct Treatment For The Screwworms, Only The Infection

The Ministry of Health and Wellness also held an impromptu press conference via Zoom to address the first confirmed human case. Vector Control Chief of Operations Kim Bautista explained that the treatment is a combination of medication, but it only tackles the infection. The larvae have to be manually removed from the wound. Here’s what he told us.
According to a press release from MOHW, the majority of the new world screwworm cases have been found in dogs, so they are urging the public to monitor their pets, especially if they have any open wounds.

As you saw on Thursday's news - the screw-worm has also been detected in wildlife.

21 Year Old Bequeno Is First Human To Become Infected By New World Screwworm

Tonight a 21 year old man from Benque Viejo is in the San Ignacio Community Hospital being treated for a New World Screwworm infestation. That’s right, the deadly pest - which started out in cattle - has now been detected in a human - a first for Belize.

We spoke to BAHA’S Deputy Director of Animal Health about the case via Zoom this afternoon. He says it was really only a matter of time:
