𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝- 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐒𝐈𝐁: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐭

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) has released its latest Consumer Price Index, showing that Belmopan has recorded the second-highest inflation rate in the country for August 2025, with an increase of 2.8% in consumer prices compared to last year. Nationally, the inflation rose to 120.4, up from 118.9, in August of last year, indicating a general rise in the cost of goods and services. Today we hit the streets of Belmopan with a simple question, “Is Belmopan expensive?” The responses came quickly, and most were a resounding yes. Residents say they are feeling the squeeze. From rising grocery bills, to increased utility costs, many shared how inflation is affecting their daily lives. But not everyone agreed, one man told us that the cost of living feels “equally expensive all around”, adding that if you want quality, you have to be willing to pay the price.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine. The war escalated after October 7, 2023, when Hamas and allied groups launched a surprise attack on Israel. In response, Israel launched large-scale military operations in Gaza, which has suffered extensive damage, with tens of thousands of Palestinians killed, many injured, and widespread displacement. The Prime Minister called for the Genocide in Palestine to stop.

“𝐔𝐒’𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐛𝐚 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝” 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐏𝐌 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧̃𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐔𝐍 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲

In 1962, the then President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, placed a full economic embargo on Cuba, prohibiting nearly all trade between the two countries. Despite the embargo being placed more than 63 years ago, the effects are still felt. During his United Nations General Assembly Speech, the Prime Minister called for the embargo to end, and for Cuba to be removed from the list that accuses them of being sponsors of terrorism.

Today, Prime Minister John Briceño took the stage at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Prime Minister’s speech was just over 15 minutes, and touched on a number of local and global issues. One of the first issues that was addressed by the Prime Minister had to do with Belize’s longstanding border dispute with Guatemala. Last week, while Belize was gearing up to celebrate its 44th year of Independence, members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces made their way to the Sarstoon and erected a Guatemalan Flag on the island. Today, the Prime Minister chastised Guatemala’s constant incursions.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭

At around 5:45 yesterday evening, police visited the Northern Regional Hospital where they observed the body of 27 year old Leonardo Vasquez, a resident of Carmelita Village. According to reports, just after 5 pm that day, Vasquez and another male person were riding a motorcycle when another cycle with two occupants approached them and demanded money from Vasquez. After Vasquez refused to hand over money, one of the assailants shot him. Vasquez was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following this incident, our colleagues at CTV3 spoke to the owner of the home where Vasquez was murdered. Police are investigating this latest murder.

𝟐𝟕 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!

Twenty-seven new names have been added to the Belize Public Service’s Walk of Recognition & Inspiration in Belmopan. The Walk of Fame was unveiled in 2020, and boasts the names of all Public Officers who have served with distinction for more than 35+ years. Today, an induction ceremony was held at the Walk of Recognition and Inspiration, where 27 new names were added. The Walk of Recognition celebrates excellence and stands as a monument that reflects legacies of persons who gave their lives to Public Service. Following the induction ceremony, we spoke with the Minister of Public Service, Henry Charles Usher. From the 27 new inductees added to the Walk of Recognition, we heard from Leroy Alvarez. Alvarez has been working with the Government since his teenage years. Following the induction ceremony, the new inductees were treated to a cocktail reception at the ArtBox in Belmopan.

𝐒𝐈𝐁 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓!

Imports and Exports are down for the first eight months of 2025 when compared to the same period last year: that’s the report coming out of the Statistical Institute of Belize. According to the SIB, Imports are down by 1.5% compared to last year. Exports are also not doing too well. The Statistical Institute of Belize says that exports are down 10%, and one of the main causes of the decline was due to lower sugar export prices and reduced prices of molasses.
