Belize is a Bridge, Not an Island: Strengthening a Literary Identity
Representing Belize at Centro de América, Primer Encuentro de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil—organised by Libros para Niños, a nonprofit in Nicaragua and IBBY Guatemala (International Board of Books for Young People), gave us at Cubola Publishers a fresh perspective on the power of the literary community. It reminded us that building a strong literary culture in Belize is a shared effort—one that can grow beyond our borders and benefit future generations.

Belize’s unique position—both geographically and culturally—means we don’t need to fit into just one regional identity. We can be part of many, sharing ideas across borders and learning from others with similar challenges. Events like this not only help us make meaningful connections across Central America but also renew our belief that Belize’s literary voice has a place in the wider world.
Our strength lies in being a bridge, not an island.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Libros para Niños for inviting us and for organising such a warm, engaging, and inspiring gathering of storytellers and book advocates.

📚 Book Week 2025 is coming to Belize this month!

Get ready to celebrate stories that inspire us! This year’s theme is:
“From the mountains to the sea, stories set us free!”

Book Week will be marked by two special days of literary events:

📖 On April 23, public libraries across Belize will host activities for readers of all ages.

📍 Then on April 29, join us for the official opening ceremony and a day of events at the Ignacia Cacho Public Library in Dangriga.

Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just discovering the wonder of books, there’s something for everyone.

Goodbye, FILEY!

The Feria del Libro de Yucatán (FILEY) has come to a successful close after a week of more than 500 workshops, book presentations, and discussions.

This free and open-to-the-public event welcomed around 240,000 visitors and featured an exhibition space with 130 exhibitors.

The Belize Book Industry Association was proud to participate, with a booth attended by publishers, librarians, and writers. Our display featured over 80 titles from Cubola Publishers, the National Library Service and Information Systems (NLSIS), NICH, The Kriol Council, Ediciones de la Hamaca, and independent authors. Despite being primarily in English, our collection attracted great interest from academics, students, institutions, and families. We were also delighted to connect with Belizean students visiting the fair.

A heartfelt thank you to the FILEY organisers for their warm hospitality—we look forward to participating again in the future.
