Over the weekend, the second round of consultations on Belize’s Marine Spatial Planning was held at the Toledo Community College. The session brought together representatives from the Fisheries Department, the Coastal Zone Management Authority, fishers, and community members from Punta Gorda and surrounding areas. The first consultation focused on gathering information and feedback from fishers. This second meeting continued those discussions, focusing on how best to balance sustainable use and protection of marine resources. One of the goals of the plan is to ensure that 20% of Belize’s reef system is designated as protected areas.

During a routine patrol, the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve enforcement team made an unusual discovery, an aquarium filled with live conch near a well-known fishermen’s island. According to authorities, this type of activity is prohibited under Belize’s Fisheries Law. A total of 154 conch were recovered, 82 mature and 72 juveniles. The enforcement team acted swiftly, relocating the live conch to the nearby Hunting Caye protected area.

A few weeks ago, PGTV was called out to Yemeri Grove Village to highlight concerns over land being surveyed in the community. Following that report, the village chairman told us that the Minister of Natural Resources reached out to them. However, Saturday October 18th, we were called back to the village, where residents say they now feel disrespected by the government. The villagers are appealing for an amicable solution to the ongoing land issue before they are forced to take to the streets in protest.

A couple of months ago, during the opening of the Mike Espat Bridge, engineer from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing stated on record that the Southern Highway would soon be painted. Not long after, the Toledo East Area Representative also mentioned that the highway would be both painted and lighted. Well, we are happy to report that after months of waiting, the work has finally begun. PGTV has always been reminding the government of their obligation to do the right thing. They promised to paint and they never paint but PGTV keep reminding them. After many reminders the road is now getting painted. On Friday October 17th, road workers were seen painting sections of the Southern Highway. A much-needed improvement that will help enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents, especially at night. This stretch of road has not been painted for more than 15 years. PGTV welcomes this important development aimed at making travel safer for all motorists.
