SoBel photos of the week: meeting an environmental challenge head on!

“…for the best, most salutary, and most beneficent purposes”.

The wide Caribbean Sea provided no barriers from the massive Sargassum buildup along the Southern Belize coastline. It produced it. With it, however, there produced a community spirit in the residents of Dangriga to push back on some of nature’s presumed vomit.
The resultant odor of so much maritime waste motivated our well-meaning residents to take action against Uncle Sea. This does not belong here, neither does the accompanied foul smell. The fund of greatness implanted in the soul of Dangriga was opened and out poured this wonderful effort to clean our beaches.
Nature gave Southern Belize a wonderful opportunity to unite our minds about a common task. The village of Hopkins faced and dealt with the same challenge, so did Placencia. Elsewhere around the cayes local residents and business used their rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows to show Mother Nature who best are equipped to dealing with these environmental conditions, and who best also are the suitable men and women and future stewards in preserving our beautiful country.
SoBel reached out to the organizers of this ambitious project in Dangriga, and willingly provided these photos of their outstanding work. They deserve our applause! More importantly, they deserve the community’s gratitude and respect. There are no challenges that cannot be met when the spirit of cooperation is activated. Sobel congratulates the organizers of this and other erosion mitigating efforts across Southern Belize.
The community is being urged to join in this effort. Our coastline looks more beautiful and we breathe fresher air when this pesky sea vomit did not plague our beaches.

SoBel photo of the week:”The Prince that standeth for the children of thy people.”(Angels of Persian mythology).

Do not forget what you’ve seen here.

In yet another sensational headline taken from the quiet lives of ordinary Dangriga residents, Southern Belize is being treated to a spectacular display of parental choice. Unfortunately, it is the mother who stood, strangely, alone on choices made between two parents, if not, different male parents, but one mother.

Other headlines claimed there is an urgent need for help, resulting in the harsh criticisms by our better placed citizens. Only the women can understand the significance of the photo below. Only they are offering their help. Who is to deny the dictates of nature in the process of generation? Both men and women are subjected to these claims. But where are the men? One celebrated Punta Rock singer asked the question for all of society, ‘who is the baby father?’ In this case, who are the children’s fathers? There’s one mother with seven children. Where are the dads? How does not one see that it requires more than an ordinary man to visit a place like this? Just as this reality in Dangriga is suggesting its residents to respond in an extraordinary way to a condition, that was common place in years past, and may still be a way of life elsewhere in Belize.

We do better when we know better. Ok, let’s see how the Culture Capital will deal with this picture. There are seven children registered in Dangriga; children who have a part of our reality. Claiming the same rights as those children whose parents have made better decisions. They deserve, as nature has prescribed, the same affection from their fellow citizens. Their goodness must be cultivated as well as the nurture of their dignity, for the sake of the community.

The children look well and so does the mother. The duty of the rest of us is to treat them well. Bring back di love. Reach Up, Reach Out! To the brothers who built on the error of another without mitigating the intractable situation of the mother, your choices are forever printed on the faces of those children. Do they have other siblngs hiding elsewhere ? And stepmothers too?

SoBel’s photo of the week offers the community this one hint that we are looking at the faces of future great men and women. Since we choose to be harsh to them, God has placed himself on their side. And who can win against God? Do not forget what you’ve seen here!

Sobel radio will resume broadcasting on Southern Belize’s dedicated band 99.3 Fm. Stay tuned.

SoBel offers condolences to the families of those who recently lost their loved ones. Have a blessed and safe weekend .

Karistan Harris Dawson

Captured on a vibrant Friday morning, Karistan Harris Dawson steps into the spotlight with grace and purpose. A passionate preschool teacher and natural storyteller, Karistan finds joy in nurturing young minds, sharing stories that spark imagination, and lighting up every room she enters.

From hosting the Ms. Primary Pageant in Dangriga to singing and reading with her little learners, Karistan brings heart and soul to everything she does. Currently pursuing her degree in Early Childhood Education, she’s proof that dedication, faith, and a love for learning can shape not only children’s futures—but your own. 🌟

Her journey is a reminder that when passion meets purpose, the results are beautiful.

During the interview with this Belizean treasure, Mrs.Harris-Dawson disclosed that:
“From a young age, I’ve always felt a deep connection to children—their curiosity, energy, and honest joy remind me daily of life’s simplest blessings. My inspiration to pursue early childhood education comes from seeing how powerful a teacher’s presence can be in a child’s life. I’ve watched children blossom with just a little patience, love, and guidance, and it made me realize that this is more than a job—it’s a calling. Every story I tell, every song I sing, every smile I give is a seed planted in the hearts of the next generation. I’m driven by the belief that even small acts of care can leave lasting impacts, and that motivates me to keep growing, learning, and shining as an educator”.

SoBel is honored to spotlight the work of the talented Mrs. Karistan Harris-Dawson.

SoBel photo of the week: At the welcome table.

For a people predisposed to celebrating and lamenting in the same breath, let’s pause for a minute to reflect on the significance of being here. At the moment, this is the closest we are in the halls of government in a long time . Whatever is being discussed is as important as having someone from the tribe in attendance. Granted, no government minister can confer any rights to any group in this country if the rights have not already been guaranteed by our Constitution! It appears now that our respected leaders have again taken on the task of ensuring those guarantees. Brilliant!! We are in Belmopan, not as government ministers, but as private citizens, who, at the invitation of a government minister, are laying down our claims to the government of Belize.
Let SoBel photo of the week serve as a memorial to where we are and what can be done with the opportunities presented to us. We can for instance, apply the vote for more competent leadership; we can also join hands and hearts in wishing our leaders well in these endeavors.
Here’s a clincher, let the individual Garifuna make use of his land and other resources and no one will have the opportunity to take it away from them.
Celebrate and cry as you wish, there is motion taking place around us which the joyful tears or tears of sorrow, will not allow us to see. Sober up and take control of your affairs is a fair request being made to you by Southern Belize Media(SoBel).

Happy July 4th from Southern Belize!

SoBel photos of the week: A Solstice reflection.

“We need not wonder if the ignorant consider the images to be nothing more than wood or stone; for just so, they who are ignorant of writing see nothing in monuments but stone, nothing in tablets but wood, and in books but a tissue of papyrus(Porphyry).”

In the bleak days of our colonial past, there was a visionary who took on the task of representing to posterity a more visible form of the mystical meaning of the images being rendered in the attached pictures. This task was dependent on the ability of the people to whom it was directed, to be able to read the Word. This brilliant idea was carried by the fact that, for future Garinagu, and other ethnic groups in Belize, it would not be enough to look at our Drums as mere symbols. It required a deeper comprehension and knowledge of what they represented.

The Drums were not only for the sounds they made; neither were they marked out for the rhythm with which they moved a people and a nation. Their true meaning is to be found in the poem of the Drums of Our Fathers!

SoBel invites first, our Garifuna people to visit and learn this poem, and meditate on it. Other cultures have done this as I witnessed during my recent trip to the northern part of the country. The people of the north tell of the Spiritual value with which they regard our drums, and are in fact disappointed by the clownishness being attached to it by the people who are the beneficiaries.

SoBel also issue the challenge to the minister of education, if this has not been done, to have the poem, Drums of Our Fathers,as a recital in primary schools across the country.

This is a reflection on a representation of the heartbeat of our people. Photos courtesy of SoBel prestigious archive.

SoBel photos of the week: who needs superheroes when the world has a dad like you?

A Dangriga dad making cottage industry work.

The culinary experience starts in the early afternoon on most weekends in Dangriga. Mr. Cordel Morris has become a staple along the busy St. Vincent Street in the Culture Capital. The rich aroma of the delicious barbecue chicken and mutton can reach anyone from blocks away. The demand for this weekend delight is so high that hungry customers waited for what sometimes seemed like hours to get a plate. And they are not disappointed. At the most reasonable price for a meal anywhere, locals and tourists are treated to a generous amount of freshly cooked rice and beans with a choice of pasta shells or potato salad. If rice and beans is not your thing, there are delicious flour tortillas with baked beans to complete your order. For an additional couple of bucks you can purchase a refreshing soda to wash your mouthwatering meal down.
Mr. Morris has been working at his craft for years in Dangriga. He explained in an interview with SoBel of the role his mother played in his choice of feeding his community. Barbecuing is an art, and Cordel has mastered it. Armed with a special sauce the man has Dangriga returning for more of his delicious ware. Of course customer satisfaction is the bedrock of his success. There’s no argument at this man’s table. The hungry customers are always right.

This is not a product endorsement, but SoBel ordered more than one plate today. Take a walk down or up St. Vincent Street in Dangriga and you’ll taste exactly what the buzz is about every weekend afternoons in Dangriga.

SoBel management sends the best and happiest Father’s Day wishes to all our fathers and mothers who filled the roles of mother and father.

Happy Father’s Day!!
