🎄 Christmas Message (2025) from SoBel (Southern Belize Media) 🎄

As the Christmas season dawns upon us once again, SoBel (Southern Belize Media) extends heartfelt greetings of peace, joy, and unity to everyone across our beloved nation. Christmas is a time of reflection, a moment when communities of every culture, language, and tradition pause to acknowledge the goodness of God and the blessings that surround us daily. We give homage to the Almighty for the precious gift of life, for health and strength, and for the resilience that carries us through triumphs and challenges alike. This sacred time of year invites us to embrace gratitude and to give love—freely, sincerely, and generously—across the length and breadth of our 8,867 square miles.

To our esteemed Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Religious Sisters and Brothers across Belize:
As we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we extend heartfelt gratitude for your faithful service, spiritual guidance, and steadfast leadership throughout the year. May the Light of Christ continue to strengthen your ministry and fill your hearts with peace, joy, and renewed hope.

We especially recognize our learning institutions, which continue to stand as pillars of hope and growth in Southern Belize and beyond. To our dedicated teachers, administrators, and support staff, thank you for your commitment to nurturing the hearts and minds of the next generation. Your service is not just a profession—it is a calling that uplifts our entire society.

We extend deep appreciation to our hardworking law enforcement officers, the Belize Defense Force (D Coy), Belize Police Department, Belize Coast Guard and all members of our security and emergency services. Your courage, vigilance, and sacrifice ensure that our communities remain safe and secure. To our devoted medical personnel, thank you for your compassion, endurance, and the healing care you provide to families across our region.

We also acknowledge and celebrate the business community, including our resilient small business owners, who continue to fuel local development, provide essential services, and keep our economy moving forward. Your daily contributions strengthen the foundation of Southern Belize.

To our fraternal brothers and sisters, our supporters, and the wonderful community at large—thank you for your unity, trust, and shared vision of upliftment. Your collective spirit is what makes Belize unique and beautiful.

We extend warm greetings to the Honorable Justices, Magistrates, Attorneys, and all officers of the Court. Your dedication to upholding justice, safeguarding rights, and strengthening the rule of law remains a guiding light for our nation.

We express our sincere appreciation to the Embassies represented in our nation. Your continued partnership, diplomacy, and support strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation that uplift our communities. Your presence reminds us that Belize stands proudly among nations committed to peace, development, and mutual respect.

To the many foreigners who have found safety, refuge and a renewed sende of hope within our shores, we welcome you with open hearts. Belize is blessed with a rich tradition of hospitality, and we are grateful that our land has become a place where you can rebuild, reconnect, and call home. May this season bring you comfort, healing, and renewed strength.

We also extend warm gratitude to the countless tourists who visit Belize each year. Your appreciation of our natural wonders, vibrant cultures, and diverse communities plays an essential role in supporting our economy. Your presence encourages growth, sustains local livelihoods, and allows Belizean families to flourish. Thank you for choosing Belize as your destination of joy, discovery, and adventure.

As we celebrate this Christmas season, may love guide our interactions, may peace fill our homes, and may God’s abundant blessings rest upon every Belizean household.

Merry Christmas, Lidánsera Bungiu Haweyuni, Merri Chrismos, Sáq’lik Ch’och’ Re Xwanq’aq li Nimasanilh, Merry K’rismaas, Ko’one’ex k’

SoBel structures: a place called home.

Over the years, SoBel captured many sites in Southern Belize. These images show where life started for many Southern Belize’s residents. They remind us of the warmth of a family love, dreams of better tomorrow, the ideals of our social ties, memories of loved ones who have passed on, and of many more stitches in the fabric of our lives. Our venerable elders reminded us, always, there’s no place like home; as humble at it may be. There is no place like home.

SoBel photo of the week: Ambassadors of our forefathers.

Mabuleda bei leh arufuduwali bei bun.

They must hear patiently, remember accurately, and weigh carefully the facts and the arguments offered before them…They must neither be ruled by stubborn pride of opinion, nor be too facile and yielding to the view and arguments of others. In deducing the motive from the proven act, they must not assign to the act either the best or the worst motives, but those which they would think it just and fair for the works to assign to it, if they themselves had done it(Provost andJudge)

A Garifuna child in Southern Belize, descendant of former colonial subjects, looking back unfiltered, at the representative of the said colonial power. This photo represents the essence of our demand for reparations to the descendants of Africa in the Caribbean. This child seems to be telling the Duchess of Essex that she represents the shared dreams of black children in the Caribbean. Our innocence is no different from the innocence of children in Europe. It was stolen by the people you represent. Do not forget what you’ve seen here. If you can take this message back to your government and Crown, do so with utmost haste. Any delay will drive us to the bitterness that is increasingly common in these parts. Besides, they will rather listen to you, than to us. Do not forget what you have seen here.

SoBel thought of the day: the passing of greatness.

You were pleased to have us shine, Yau.
You left a legacy of brilliance that will never be diminished. Your drums, ahh, the instruments of your soul, brought our people together and changed our country. I have a pair in my house. Every child in recent Dangriga has touched one. Every citizen in Southern Belize has rocked to the captivating sounds of your handicraft. As if that is not enough you’ve passed the art of making your beautiful instrument to many generations.

You attained immortality long before the Almighty decided to take you to join with our Ancestors.

If SoBel could write it across the skies in bold letters, I’d choose these words, “ Yau, you will be greatly missed.” But it is the memory of times gone, of your encouraging words, to look beyond the gloom of our days, will stay with me. My mother introduced you to me as Yau, our uncle. To all of Dangriga, you are our Father! May your Divine Soul rest in peace.

Erica, et al, SoBel express our deepest condolences. Dangriga, if I had the authority, I’d fly the flag at half mast and observe two minutes of silence in honor of this great Garifuna man.

Community locals continue to showcase their cultural pride through SoBel media!

Meet Mrs. Hermisha Garcia Avila, cultural teacher and primary school teacher at Sacred Heart School. This brilliant superstar is also the cultural coordinator for that Catholic institution.

Mrs. Avila proudly posed for SoBel’s camera to showcase a beautiful piece in Garifuna fashion. SoBel is proud of our Garifuna educator. Congratulations, Mrs. Avila!!

SoBel photo of the week: Seremein Ramos.

At an event of historical importance for the Garifuna people in Dangriga, the entire town is demanding more respect from the area representative, the minister of indigenous affairs or his representative.

It is our custom for the tribute to our hero, the Honorable Thomas Vincent Ramos, that those in attendance, particularly those showing solidarity with the people be clad in the traditional attire. In a blatant disregard to our customs, the representative of the minster of indigenous affairs, can be seen completely out of attire; dressed in her regular daily sporting sweater with a baseball cap on her head.

The Garifuna champion sitting next to her might have excused this as an oversight. But the Garifuna women who travelled from far or near, who gave thought to the solemnity of the occasion, were aghast when this person, representing the area representative, was given a front row seat to display her ignorance.

In the past, minister Zabaneh sported the Garifuna dashiki, first, in order to win our votes, and occasionally to show solidarity with us. What happened now? What has changed?

Well, let’s see. The minister can be regarded as being no longer relevant to our issues or he no longer cares about the votes we cast for him. And Garifuna leaders are quietly observing this trend. Another observation is of note. Parents and children of other ethnicities are afforded Garifuna attire when celebrating with us. This is clearly not the case here.

Did the women of our culture ran out of material to make a set of Garifuna attire for the representative of the area rep, or she would not have worn it out of contempt for the Garifuna people? Bella is doing her thing for us on the world stage. The person sitting next to the mayor surely can do the same, locally. We are not asking for much; just a little respect.

SoBel’s thought of the day: A very useful, very practical and obviously very effective strategy amongst the Garinagu.

Destroy your own domestic enemies, and you will then be proud to know that in the process you have defeated all of the old society.

Therefore there is no reason for you to express your honorable wishes for the liberation of the Garifuna people.

SoBel made a keen observation on the differences in views related to these monuments. And a storyteller, preferably, a young history student should be placed at each monument to tell his/her monument related story.

Ours is a story of Arrival add Survival. When visiting Dangriga pay a visit to the legendary figures or their representatives who gave rise to these monuments. The widow of Dr. Aranda is still with us on Aranda Crescent. Mr. Roy and Phyl Cayetano are both still at their original residence. These beacons are around to talk with us. Drop a dime or a nickle to show your love. Let’s celebrate the living as we dance around the stones.

Reach Up, Reach Out…bring back di love. Build your tourism business on the infrastructure of love. It won’t hurt. We look forward to your visit.

This 3>1 schoolboy adage is played out. With all that is happening in our communities the tales of two monuments must now be told.

Happy Garifuna Settlement month!
