Perrogi had a rough morning. He had to have his disco 🪩’s removed this morning which probably means he’s never going to willingly hop up in the truck for a road trip again! I will say, they do it a little different here. We’re sitting in the waiting room and the doc walks in with a syringe, shoots Progg in the hip and goes about his business. A few minutes later P-Man is completely out with his tongue hanging out on the floor. Once he’s out they come , grab him by his front and back legs, and lug him into the next room. Fast forward 20 minutes and they bring him back out. Place him on the floor in front of us, give us a couple of pills we need to give him, and send him on his way. Entire process, less than an hour. Cost, $65. He had a nice sleep on the way home and is now just standing on the back deck looking around like,”what the heck just happened?”! He’s a good boy!!❤️

Fun little show tonight. It’s been dry today so he’s been super busy around here. Listen to that PT6 whine!

Perrogi meeting the new neighbors. There was a little bull that kept coming to the fence and getting nose to nose with him. He wanted to play so badly but I doubt momma would have been too happy about that.

We put a water bucket out in the jungle behind the house because it has been really dry and there is barely any water in the creek. Figured the animals would appreciate it and this morning we got a visit from a Coatimundi. I usually put fruit scraps out there for them to eat and yesterday I put out the remnants of a pineapple I had cut up, which Mr. Coati obviously enjoyed.

First rain since we got our water catchment set up. We have pipe water but are looking forward to getting all that free roof water! We have a 1300 gallon tank and very advanced water filtration system down to 1 micron. I will also be adding a UV sterilization system we brought with us. We also put all of our drinking water through our Berkey so I think we’re well protected from all the creepy crawlies……now let me go eat some of those delicious plumbs I picked up off the ground (Sonja always get mad when I do that.).😂😂

We also went to visit our friend Joerdy at his store in San Antonio Cayo today and got some veggies and plants. He had some beautiful stevia, rosemary, and peppermint. The star of the visit was the No. 11 mangoes we bought. Holy smokes! One of the best I have ever eaten. Might have to make another run up the hill soon!

Had a fun day in the mountains today. Went to a place called Barton Creek. It’s a Mayan Archeological Preserve with a huge cave that Barton Creek flows through. The cave is 4.8 miles long and you can take canoe tours of it. We didn’t take the tour today because our grandson is coming in July and we’re going to do it with him. It’s a crazy drive out there. There are two places where you have to cross the river and fortunately the water is low so it was no problem. It is absolutely beautiful. We took Perrogi with us and he had a great time learning how to swim in the river. He did get car sick on the rough road and is now sound asleep on the floor beside my chair. He’s tired from his great adventure!

It’s been a busy week and we’ve gotten a lot done. Fortunately we’ve had great help from our friends Jorge and Escar. These boys are 13 and 11 and are great little helpers. They work very hard and are eager to learn how to build and about all the tools we use. They live about 1/2 mile down the road with their mom, dad, and three little brothers in a house not much bigger than the one they are helping us build. They are on summer break so they work every day. On days they don’t work with us they go to a farm and pick up stones in the freshly plowed fields or at a chicken farm feeding and cleaning up for 5000 chickens. It’s very hard work under the hot sun and they work from 7-4 in 90-100 degree heat. There are very few kids down here that don’t work, and I’m talking real work. When we had our shipping container delivered one of the kids on the 55 ton crane crew was just 15 years old. We are thoroughly impressed by these kids. Hopefully we’ll finish up the siding next week, but tomorrow we are taking a break! Enjoy your weekend.

Mr. Perrogi was out in the back barking at a tree. He really never barks, so I knew something was up. Walked out and he was barking at this big beautiful Tropical Rat Snake that was devouring one of the many many squirrels we have around here. He finished his meal and moved along. Pretty cool to see though. He was probably 7 feet long and they are non-venomous so not something to worry about.

Metal is going on the roof! We got the first sheet up this morning. Sonja never fails to impress me. These sheets are 24 feet long and about 43” wide and she helped me muscle it up there. The wind is really up today so we will continue on Monday. Fun stuff happening here!

It’s Mango season! Yummy.
Interesting factoid about Mangoes that I would loved to have known yesterday. When you pick them the spray a sap out of the stem. When this sap shoots directly into your eye it really really burns. Then the rest of it ends up on your face, neck, and arm which the next day turns into a terrible, burning, itching rash. Apparently a certain portion of the population is really allergic to the sap of Mangoes and I am fortunate to be in this portion of the population. Lucky me! I read that it should clear in around three weeks…… I’ll be sleeping with my buddy Benadryl for a while I guess. Mangoes; delicious and mean!! Who knew??

Our Story

Every day is an adventure at the Crooked Shed Homestead. Just across the fence from our house our small herd of Irish Dexter cattle live on 35 acres of beautiful Oklahoma pasture. Our Dexters are raised with no antibiotics, no added hormones, and always grass finished. Our pastures are never sprayed with w**d killers or chemicals of any kind. All of our beef is USDA butchered and inspected. We love our pigs! We raise Bershire, Hampshire and Blue Butt pigs. The run freely in a combination of pasture and woods and eat fresh garden vegetables, hay, swine pellets, and whatever bugs, roots, and grasses they can find in the wild. We put hands on them every day to keep them tame, friendly, and manageable. Our pigs are raised with no added hormones or antibiotics and are USDA butchered. If you love lamb as much as we do you will be a lifelong customer once you’ve tasted our Dorper Lamb. A very mild meat from this African breed of pasture raised animals. Again, we raise them without any antibiotics or added hormones. Eggs are also available from our farm. We raise "truly" free range chickens. Never confined to special chicken tractors or electric nets our chickens are free to roam and forage throughout the entire acreage of our farm. They put themselves to bed at night in their coops and start their free forage every morning, usually before we are even up and about...... That's freedom!
