Did an awesome canoe trip through a Mayan cave this afternoon. It’s about 5 miles long but we only went about 3000 feet in. As you can see, there is pottery still in the cave. The black pot and plate in the hole are on a ledge used for sacrificial offerings and were used to collect blood. On the ledge opposite this one there are 28 bodies. 8 are royals and are on the top level. The other 20 are bodies of sacrificed people. You can see one of the skulls from the canoes. If you look you can see the teeth and the skull is pointed up towards the ceiling. The guide said it is a child of about 4. It really is an amazing place.

Killer bees are no joke! A couple of days ago Victor, the man who does groundskeeping in the neighborhood, was mowing at the neighbor’s house across the street. We were working at one of the other houses and our neighbor called frantically telling us to stay away from our house. Victor had apparently upset a hive of killer bees. Fortunately he ran and, although he was stung quite a few times, he was fine. Our neighbor was trapped in her house as thousands of bees attacked her chickens, turkey, ducks, and Guinea fowl. Unfortunately they killed all but one chicken, all but one Guinea, and the turkey. The ducks were able to fly away. It was quite sad. I called a man I know from the village and he came over to look at the hive once the bees had calmed down. It was about 15’ up a mango tree I had been picking mangoes from just a few weeks ago. It was a huge hive and he said it was a dangerous one. He came back at dusk, climbed the tree, sprayed and killed most of the bees, and knocked down the hive. Crazy part, he didn’t even wear a suit. Just his street clothes.
He said normally they would bag the entire hive and move it, but this one was too high and too big so they had to eradicate it. What a day! Fortunately nobody was seriously injured and the hive is no longer a danger…….

Just got the kitchenette installed in the new bungalow and it is absolutely beautiful. The cabinets are Caribbean Cedar and the countertops, yes, they are wood, are 2” thick Guanscaste hardwood. This was made by a guy just a few miles down the road. Absolutely beautiful work and done in just a few weeks. When I saw it the first thing I thought of was a very famous American architect. Can you guess who? We’re still waiting for the 2-burner cooktop which will be here next week. We’re getting close to finishing this project!

There are lots of feral chickens around here. They just wander around laying eggs in random places. Last month a hen dropped 8 eggs under one of our houses so we grabbed them, threw them in our incubator, and five of them hatched. We’re back in chickens baby!!

Our Story

Every day is an adventure at the Crooked Shed Homestead. Just across the fence from our house our small herd of Irish Dexter cattle live on 35 acres of beautiful Oklahoma pasture. Our Dexters are raised with no antibiotics, no added hormones, and always grass finished. Our pastures are never sprayed with w**d killers or chemicals of any kind. All of our beef is USDA butchered and inspected. We love our pigs! We raise Bershire, Hampshire and Blue Butt pigs. The run freely in a combination of pasture and woods and eat fresh garden vegetables, hay, swine pellets, and whatever bugs, roots, and grasses they can find in the wild. We put hands on them every day to keep them tame, friendly, and manageable. Our pigs are raised with no added hormones or antibiotics and are USDA butchered. If you love lamb as much as we do you will be a lifelong customer once you’ve tasted our Dorper Lamb. A very mild meat from this African breed of pasture raised animals. Again, we raise them without any antibiotics or added hormones. Eggs are also available from our farm. We raise "truly" free range chickens. Never confined to special chicken tractors or electric nets our chickens are free to roam and forage throughout the entire acreage of our farm. They put themselves to bed at night in their coops and start their free forage every morning, usually before we are even up and about...... That's freedom!
